Where is God When You Need Him?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

It is comforting to remember that God is near us in our struggles. He is above — watching over us. He is beside — walking with us. He is in — making his home inside of us.

What a great privilege to walk by faith in a God who cares so much for us!

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

You can tell a lot about someone by the company they keep. Jesus spent time with a variety of people. He ate with Pharisees. He ate with “tax collectors and sinners.” He allowed a sinful woman to wash his feet with her tears. He allowed another to anoint his body with costly oils for his burial. He welcomed children into his midst.

What does this say about him? One thing is that he came to reclaim people. His love knows no barriers.

That is a great comfort to us. While Jesus hates sin, he always loves the sinner. He is ready to make things right for us. The question is, are we?

Promises of God

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

God keeps his word. This seems simple enough. Yet, how often do we forget that? How often does our faith slip because we forget God’s promises?

It is a faith-builder to read the promises of God and then see their fulfillment. The story of Israel is an account that God keeps his promises. The coming of Jesus tells us that God keeps his promises.

Like the song says, “Trust and obey for there is no other way.” God will follow through. It is up to us to follow.

Just the Facts

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

When John the Baptist was in prison, he sent word to Jesus to inquire if he was indeed the Messiah. Jesus sends word back for John to remember the facts about the Messiah. He quotes from Isaiah to describe what he was doing — raising the dead, healing the sick, preaching the good news, etc.

By the way, Jesus quoted most of the passage in Isaiah. He left out setting the captives/prisoners free. John may have been asking if he was going to get out of jail. By leaving that out, Jesus indirectly told John that he would not be set free.

There are times when you and I need to remember the facts. We need to look at who Jesus says he is and then at what he does. He is Messiah and he is bigger than the world in which we live. No obstacle will stand before him.

Marching Off the Map

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

When Alexander the Great died his generals found that he had marched them off of the map. Every known map they had was now obsulete. In order to get back to Greece they would have to retrace their steps. Eventually they made it home and created new maps of new territories.

God often leads us into new places. We often balk at the possibilities God places before us. We become  concerned with the unknown instead of the God we know.

Where is God leading?

Five Keys to Fruitfulness

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I understand that when Herod’s temple was in place, there was a gold vine that ran across the front. For a significant donation people could buy golden leaves or grapes to put on the vine. For even more money the leaves could be personalized.

Jesus took his disciples by the temple and pointed out that he was the true vine. In him they would bear real fruit. In fact, they would bear much fruit by being connected to him, not an artificial vine.

Consider the fruit in our lives. What are we bearing? Is it real or artificial? Are we connected to Jesus or disconnected?

War By Faith

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Do you remember the significance of December 7, 1941? It is the “day which will live in infamy,” F. D. Roosevelt said. The Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor was a wake up call to America. There were and are people who want to see the overthrow of the United States.

That is also true of God’s people. Often we are lulled to sleep in regard to the war that is going on all around us. There is an evil one who wants to take us down. Faith helps us have victory over the devices he uses. Abraham had to war by faith, so do we.

The Inside Out Christian

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

There are a lot of imitations in the world. I read recently that a group of mechanics was making imitation Ferraris. On the outside, the cars looked correct but upon deeper investigation, the truth was clear.

When we look at the Bible, there are a number of important lessons to be learned. One of these is the way that GOD has decided we become his followers. We need to investigate the scriptures to see truth and then follow it from the heart.

Waiting By Faith

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

How patient are you? This sermon begins with 30 seconds of silence - unannounced. The silence made a terrific point, we are not very patient.

When Abraham was called and tested by God, he had to learn the hard lesson of waiting. There were times that God was silent and Abraham needed to wait. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn’t. The things that happened to him were a result of his faith in waiting on God — or not.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

There are times when we are surprised at who God calls to be in his presence. Maybe the greatest surprise is that he calls us.
