			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">In 1999, an insurance company rated the most dangerous intersections for accidents in the United States. The year’s winner (or better, loser) was the corner of Belt Line Road and Midway Road in Addison, Texas. There were 263 reported crashes at that intersection in the Dallas suburb. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Often when I come to an intersection, I think of the people who are meeting there. Some have come a long distance; some short. Yet, we have all arrived at the same time.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Arriving at the intersection, we all have decisions to make. Will we obey the laws or break them? Will we be courteous to other drivers or selfish?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">As we travel on our journey through this world we often come to some serious intersections. We repeatedly come to intersections of the “broad” and “narrow” ways (Matthew 7:13-14). Each time we have an important decision to make. Do we choose the narrow way along with the “few” or do we choose the broad way with the “many”? Will we follow the instructions or refuse them? It is a serious choice that demands our attention and exercises our wisdom.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me” (John 14:6). Today, with the rising of the sun, we have made it to yet another intersection. Which road will we take?</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">I was recently sitting in a restaurant and heard a bird chirping. Or, at least so I thought. It was actually a ringtone on someone’s cellphone. I could not help but think of all of the excellent tones people are using today (my phone is the sound of an old telephone – no imagination). These tones are an imitation of something or someone.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span style="font-size: small;">In 1820, Charles Caleb Colton coined the phrase that states: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”</span> <span style="font-size: small;">Those words are still true. It is especially true for the life of a disciple of Jesus. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The Christian journey is not just a life that doesn’t “cuss or smoke or drink or chew or go with girls who do.” It is a life given to the imitation of Jesus himself. A disciple of a rabbi would give all he had to become just like his rabbi. That is what we are called to do. Paul said it this way to his disciples, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11.1)</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This is especially evident in the trials we encounter. I understand that a jeweler has a sure-fire test to establish a diamond’s authenticity. He places the jewel under water. A true diamond will always out-sparkle an imitation. In fact the imitation will lose its sparkle.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Tests come and go. What do they reveal? They may reveal the real image of Jesus in our lives or they may reveal a cheap imitation. Who am I trying to imitate? What am I trying to become?</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">She said, &#8220;Go back to your room and drink lots of orange juice, take two aspirins, cover yourself with all the blankets you can find and sweat the cold out. <p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The man smiled and said, &#8220;Thanks.&#8221; Then he added, &#8220;By the way, I&#8217;m Dr. Mayo from the Mayo Clinic.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">When it comes to medical matters, I would prefer to take the advice of an esteemed doctor over that of a famous actress.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Likewise, when it comes to spiritual matters, we have choices. We can look to celebrities. We can look to those we regard as &#8220;wise&#8221;. We can look to the stars (astrology). We can even look to the angels. Or we can look to Jesus Christ. It should not be a difficult choice.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Jesus Christ is superior in every way (Hebrews 1.4; 3.56-6). He is the Son of God, the Lord of lords and King of kings.  He is God. He creates, sustains, governs, redeems and cleanses us of sin. He is the one to be worshiped by the angels. He is omniscient, omnipotent, unchanging and eternal. Why would you look anywhere else?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">&#8220;Jesus said to him, &#8216;I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.&#8217;&#8221; (John 14:6)</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Bertoldo de Giovanni was the teacher of Michelangelo, perhaps the greatest sculptor of all time. Michelangelo was fourteen years old when he came to Bertoldo. It was obvious that he was enormously gifted. Bertoldo was wise enough to realize that gifted people are often tempted to coast rather than grow. Therefore he kept pressuring his young prodigy to work seriously at his art. One day he came into the studio to find Michelangelo toying with a piece of sculpture far beneath his abilities. Bertoldo grabbed a hammer and smashed the work into pieces, shouting this unforgettable message, “Michelangelo, talent is cheap; dedication is costly!”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Isn’t it tempting to just coast along? We don’t get much or grow much, but it is comfortable. We just “rock along.”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Our challenge is to make our whole life count for God. When our here time is over, will we be able to say we did not hold back? Will we have put our whole effort into what God has placed before us?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Philippians 3.13-14 can inspire us: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Football players have a saying &#8212; “leave it all on the field.” It means that during the game they don’t hold anything back. Win or lose, their best effort is in the game, not the locker room. For what will our best efforts be?</span></span></p>

The dad asked, “If three frogs were sitting on a limb over a pool and one frog decided to jump into the pool, how many would be left?”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The son answered, “Two.”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">“No,” the dad replied, “There are three frogs and one decides to jump, how many are left?”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">“Oh, I get it,” the son said, “It’s like peer pressure, if one decides to jump, they will all jump. So, there would be none left.”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">“No, son, the answer is three. One frog only DECIDED to jump.” The dad responded.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Does that sound like any New Year’s resolutions you have heard of? Too often we DECIDE we will make some changes but either we fail to begin or we start and do not follow through.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Maybe weight loss is your resolution. Maybe it is something even more important, getting your relationship back on track with God. Don’t just make the decision, make the decision count and follow through!</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Have you kept up with the current “Occupy” protesters? It appears that some want to play “Robin Hood.” They want to take from “achievers” and give to those they deem “entitled.”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Jesus told a parable in Luke 19.11-27 in which a ruler gave money to ten servants. They were to “occupy” (KJV), or “do business” or “busy themselves” until her returned. Some of the servants were productive, at least one was not. Each was rewarded accordingly. The achievers were given privilege and more responsibility. The unproductive one lost what he had (not vice versa).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Jesus IS returning for a day of accounting. While we are of differing abilities (Matthew 25.14-30), he has entrusted us with a common task while we wait: do business/occupy with the message of the Kingdom of Heaven (1 Thessalonians 2.4; 1 Timothy 1.11; 6.20). </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">We are not to be idle as we wait for the return of Jesus; we are to be on the offensive to advance his Kingdom (Matthew 16.18). His disciples have tasks to do. We are taught to love God supremely – that is action, not just emotion. We are to actively love our neighbors as ourselves. We care for those who need (Matthew 25.31ff).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The business of the Kingdom of Heaven is different than the business of Wall Street. In fact, God’s business is far more important, far more significant! The Kingdom of Heaven is faith business that impacts the now as well as the eternal. With what are you occupied?</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">On the night Jesus was betrayed he took a towel and washed the feet of all of his disciples, including the one who would betray him as well as the one who denied him (see John 13). In doing this, he signified his servant spirit. He also showed how his disciples were to be servants to others.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">When we think of Jesus we think of a mighty king and a humble servant. We see him serving through his teaching; through healings; through his ability to raise people from the darkness of despair. Ultimately his servant’s heart would take him to the cross to express the love of God in his death, burial, and resurrection.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">One of the most enjoyable things I have been a part of was a recent celebration of the volunteer servants at the South Yukon congregation. We had a nice Chick-Fil-A catered breakfast, some amusing entertainment, some gifts, and a presentation of a towel to people who have given their time and energies to a cause beyond themselves. This towel is a reminder of our call to service.</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Last summer, during some of that blistering heat, a man from the Yukon, OK community went missing. Suddenly, police, firemen, paramedics, his family, and a host of volunteers began looking for him. For hours in the heat and even into the evening people searched. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This story is not unique to our community. Over the years we have heard of many intense search and rescue missions. Each branch of the military has stories of finding the misplaced. This is because people are important!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">These stories remind me of a great lesson that Jesus taught in Luke 15:1-7. He told of a shepherd who had lost a sheep. Instead of cutting his losses, he left the remaining ninety-nine and went into the dangers of the wilderness to find the one lost sheep. When he found the sheep, he carried it home and had a great celebration with his friends and neighbors.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">In the grand scheme of things some of us may be like the lost sheep of the story. We know we are lost, but are clueless as to how to go home without the leading of our Shepherd. The reality is that God has initiated the search process and mapped out the way of salvation for us. His grace is so strong that it is as if he is carrying us to a great celebration of salvation!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This week’s sermon deals with this great story. I am calling it, “<em>Sometimes I Get Carried Away!</em>” Come and share in the truth that God cares intensely for YOU! YOU are important to him! How important? Enough to give his all!</span></span></p>

Oklahoma has tornados, excruciatingly hot and dry summers, bitterly cold winters with record-setting blizzards, and O yeah, even effects of hurricanes (I don’t mean the University of Tulsa, either). In addition, we are now experiencing earthquakes! I guess Oklahoma has something for everyone.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">In recent days there have been a number of tremors in Oklahoma. Many people immediately thought of the end of the world as they shook in their homes. Can the earthquakes be a sign of the end?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">It is evident in the Bible that earthquakes were of significance. Elijah looked for God in the earthquake, but he was not there (1 Kings 19). Ezekiel experienced a vision from God that incorporated an earthquake (see chapter 3). Amos 1 and Zechariah 14 recount a devastating earthquake in the history of Israel. Jesus warns of earthquakes in Matthew 24 and at his crucifixion the earth shook (Matthew 27:54).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">God may be “sending” earthquakes or they may occur as a sample of nature’s groaning as a by-product of our disobedience (Romans 8:22). However they are coming, they certainly catch our attention and direct us to the One who is in control of all things.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Is Jesus coming soon? That would be great, but we don’t know. In the meantime, we keep our eyes fixed on him (Hebrews 12:1) and prepare for the day we WILL meet him.</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Have you noticed that we live in a time when people seem to be extremely critical of one another? How often do we see the negative instead of the positive in a person?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Try this little experiment. When you are in a group of your peers, praise an individual who is not among you. Pick out a virtue of this person and brag on him or her to the others. In many (maybe most) cases you will hear something like, “Yeah but . . .” and then the speaker will begin to tear down the individual by pointing out flaws.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The trouble is, we are all flawed. Sin and our sinful tendencies have distorted the image of God in our lives. This is where God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the scriptures come in. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39).This includes praising others as we would want to be praised. This would mean protecting the integrity of others as we would want to be protected.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This is not that easy. It takes appreciation for: God’s love for us (by the way, God loves YOU immensely – he told me so in John 3:16); the gift of Jesus – not just on the cross but in showing us how to live out the instructions of God; the Holy Spirit who empowers our lives to follow his inspired scriptures. It comes when we are able to treat others the way God has treated us.</span></span></p>

<p>In ancient times, rabbis said, “When two sit together and exchange words of torah, then the divine presence is among them.” Hear it from Jesus’ perspective: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them&#8221; (Matthew 18:20).</p>

<p>One of the purest forms of worship is study. When we sing or pray, we give God <em>our</em> words. When we study, we receive <em>God’s</em> words. What a great privilege it is to hear, understand, and do the words of God!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It is important to have friends to encourage us along the way. We understand the value of relationships between friends. The wise man said, “A friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17a). But we also have the need to be to become more like Jesus. Again, the writer of Proverbs declares, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We all need people who will challenge, encourage, and hold us accountable to be better people tomorrow than we are today. We know we need to be godly people. We know we need to be like Jesus and “go about doing good.” Yet how often do good intentions come and go with no results?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I want to encourage you to find friends who will be supportive and challenging to your spiritual life. The disciples did that for each other. We need it, too.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">I heard about a woman who had invited her husband to attend church with her for years. Sunday after Sunday he declined. Finally one day he decided to attend services with her. She hoped that the preacher would have a good sermon to encourage him. To her chagrin the preacher had chosen the fifth chapter of Genesis which is the lineage from Adam to Noah.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">At the end of the service when the invitation was given, her husband went forward. He decided to become a follower of Jesus and was baptized (Acts 2.38; Romans 6.1-4; Galatians 3.27). She was shocked and thrilled!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">She asked him what made him decide to become a disciple of Jesus after such a sermon. He responded that in the list all but one of the people died. He realized that he, too would die so he needed to prepare himself to meet God.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Recently Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers, passed away. I know nothing of his beliefs about God but I do know that unless Jesus tarries we will also pass from this life into eternity. Regardless of our level of financial success we will die. We have that promise (Hebrews 9.27). What we do between now and then is of paramount importance!</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">One of the interesting things to me about heading into the future is that we have to head into the unknown – backwards. Picture a rowing team in a race. The rowers face the stern of the boat to row the boat forward. They see where they have been but do not see where they are going. They are forced to rely on the Coxswain to steer the boat and keep their timing.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This is exactly how God’s people deal with the future events of life. We are not able to see what is coming, but we can see where we have been. We trust Jesus to direct our “boats.” He will avoid the dangerous waters and keep us headed in the right direction.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span style="font-size: small;">Some of the Psalms, such as the 105</span><sup><span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span></sup><span style="font-size: small;"> recount the nation’s story in its walk with God. Stephen recounted the story in Acts 7 just before the enemies of the cross killed him.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">One of the benefits in retelling the story is that we can remember what God has done for us in the past. If he took care of us then, will he take care of us now? Faith says that he will. It is the assurance of things hoped for and evidence of the unseen (Hebrews 11.1).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Is your faith wavering? Do you have doubts? Get in the boat! Let Jesus guide your life, knowing that he is faithful to his people as he directs their lives.</span></span></p>

		<title>Christian Silence Has No Voice</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Did you hear that a couple in San Juan Capistrano, California was fined for hosting a Bible study in their home? The initial charge was $300. The next payment is to be $500 for each additional gathering. City officials cite a municipal code violation that prohibits religious, fraternal, or non-profit organizations from meeting in residential neighborhoods without a permit. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Do you see ANY problems with this? Has the city of San Juan Capistrano overstepped its bounds? Are the people of the community restricted from practicing freedom of religion? Where does the Constitution limit Christian activity to a church building? If this is an issue of <em>frequency or the size of the crowd</em>, should <em>that</em> not be the regulation rather than restricting a “religious” organization? &#8220;At the same time that our government is singling out homosexual groups for special protection (under the guise of civil rights) it is also singling out religious groups for special discrimination!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Isn’t it interesting that when the church began, people met in public places like the temple in Jerusalem as well as in houses (Acts 2:46)? In addition to eating meals together, they taught the bible in homes (Acts 20:20). Those early believers treated their homes as “small temples” in which they would honor God with worship, prayer, and study.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Have you ever heard people say, “That could never happen in America (or Oklahoma)? Well, it IS happening in America. What is to prevent such governmental actions in our state or other parts of the country?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The answer is – WE THE PEOPLE. We are the keys to stopping unconstitutional government activities. We must let our voices be heard in our Capitols, both state and federal. We must demand Constitutional compliance. If we do not, Christian silence will have no voice.</span></p>

What are the odds?</span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">People go to Vegas or play the Lottery in an effort to win large sums of money. What are the odds?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Believe it or not, there is a biblical application. Imagine the odds of the accuracy of the Bible if it was not inspired by God. Sixty-six books were written by about forty men over hundreds of years. Yet, the storyline remains intact. Here is a challenge for the skeptics. Go to the library and pull any sixty-six books written by at least forty people over a period of 1500 years. Do they match? Do the stories harmonize?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Here are some more things to consider. What are the odds of the following:</span></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">That Micah could predict the exact location of the Messiah’s birth 700 years in advance? </span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">1000 years before Jesus David predicted his betrayal by a friend?</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Six centuries before, Zechariah predicted that he would be sold for thirty pieces of silver?</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">In the eighth century before his coming, Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be born of a virgin?</span></span></li>
</ul>

<p>A preacher once illustrated the loneliness of Americans by mentioning an ad in a Kansas newspaper. <p>The fact of American loneliness has been validated by the American Council of Life Insurance. They found that college students are our loneliest group. The students are followed by the divorced, welfare recipients, single Moms, housewives, and the elderly.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p>As God created the world, he repeated in each phase, “It was good.” Then he said that it was NOT good for the man to be alone. So he created woman. Even from the beginning God declares the reality of our social needs.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p>There is another creation of God that exists in part to help fill our need for others. This is the community of faith we refer to as the “Church.” We generally think of the church as a worshiping people; a serving people; or a studying people. It is these and more. It also serves the purpose of mutual encouragement and partnership (Acts 2:41-47).</p>

Many stood outside the arena to voice their opposition to “</span>a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence” (see the Declaration of Independence, 1776, for the full quote). They know that if Christians have their way there God will rule instead of “every man doing what is right in his own eyes.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Governor Perry reminds us of what our Founders knew. We are a people who are dependent on God. There are standards to live by (John 14:6; 12:48). There are consequences to abusing those standards (Deuteronomy 11:26-28).</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">By the year 1815 state and federal governments had issued over 1400 calls to prayer. Thomas Jefferson, whom many vilify in regard to Christian virtue, called Virginia to prayer more than once.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">On a recent road trip I noticed a local <em>“Church of Christ” </em>building in a small town. It was typical in many ways. One thing, however, stood out. Bushes had grown over the “Christ” part of the sign. All you could read was <em>“Church of.”</em></span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This may or may not say something about the priority of their landscaping. It did make me think of a pervasive attitude among many churches. We church people often allow the things of the Church to obscure the Christ. The church’s mission is not self-promotion. It is CHRIST promotion. Our job is to lift Jesus so that people can be drawn to HIM (John 12:32).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Churches can easily develop traditions or actions that are well-intentioned. The danger is that these activities can overshadow Jesus and his purposes just as bushes over the sign. It could be a “sacred cow” ministry. It could be an order of worship. It could be a version of the Bible or any number of things that take our eyes off of Jesus and onto ourselves.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Some Greeks came to Philip and made a request. “Sir, we wish to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Showing Jesus to others is a fundamental element to the life of disciples of the Son of God. People are not necessarily interested in our perceptions about Jesus, they want to see Jesus. Thus, in-depth study of the Bible and clear teaching are essential to seeing Him.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">This is how I often feel about studying the Bible. There are magnificent truths there. Some of these are very simple and easily seen. Some, however, seem to be covered with a veil of mystery. When this is lifted and we clearly see the realities that God shows us, we are awe-struck by His beauty.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Jesus spoke of eating of his body and drinking of his blood in John 6. Some of his disciples said that it was a “hard (difficult) saying” and walked away from him. When his closest disciples refused to leave Peter gave the reason, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,” (6:68).</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">There is no doubt that Peter and the other disciples had experienced “seeing” the truths of God displayed in the life of Jesus. They saw his glory at the mount of transfiguration. They heard the Father’s voice at his baptism and witnessed the Holy Spirit’s descent to him as a dove. They saw Jesus as the Son of God.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">You and I have an exciting task before us. It requires great determination and perseverance. We have the opportunity to learn the things of God by tenacious study of His Word. Some things are easy – some things require more time and effort. In the end we see a spectacular God!</span></span></p>

Observing the activity regularly, he was especially impressed by the conscientious operator of a large piece of equipment. The day finally came when he had a chance to tell this man how much he’d enjoyed watching his exceptional workmanship. Looking astonished, the operator replied slowly, &#8220;You’re not the supervisor?&#8221;</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Have you noticed how important it is to keep the proper perspective on things? When churches assemble we are reminded that the “audience” is not in the pews and the “performers” are not on the stage. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">God</span> is the audience and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">we</span> all are the performers. We must keep the perspective or we distort the reality of our relationship to God.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">An elderly man owned a 1965 Ford Mustang which he purchased brand new. For all those years he kept it in his garage and only brought it out for a drive on special sunny summer days. What caused him to act so unusually? It was his perspective – the car was his treasure!</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, did she get away with it or is she innocent? The Florida jury decided that Casey Anthony did not murder or abuse her two year old daughter, Caylee. The verdict is in and cannot legally be changed.<br />
 <br />
This puts us in memory of another high profile case. Did O.J. kill his wife? The jury said, “No.” The debate still rages.<br />
 <br />
Maybe Casey and O.J. committed the crimes they were accused of and got away with murder; maybe not. In either case we are mindful that there is a Judge before whom they will give an account (Hebrews 9:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10). The truth will be revealed.<br />
 <br />
But wait! There’s more. Not only will O.J. and Casey be there, I will, too; so will you. Crimes such as murder or child abuse are serious. So is ANY sin. We tend to categorize sin as “acceptable” or “unacceptable.” Some are serious to us and some we can live with. The truth is all sin is serious. All sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).<br />
 <br />
How often do we sit in judgment of others? How often do we want to determine the guilt of someone else? How often do we gloss over our own actions?<br />
 <br />
Maybe Justice was served with Casey and O.J., maybe not. One day the books that matter eternally will be opened and we will know. In the meantime, we must remember those books are recording the actions of each of our lives as well. What story are you writing?<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A dating website recently dropped 30,000 of its clients, refunding the payments some had made. The reason is that the 30,000 were not attractive enough for  membership. To become members, applicants are voted on by current members based on their physical appeal. There was a glitch in the system and numerous people slipped through the validation process only to be rejected a few weeks later.<br />
 <br />
Certainly a business can set up its guidelines, but think about some of the implications of this site. First, people are passing judgments on others based solely on external values. Have you ever known a “pretty person” who was hard to get along with? External beauty alone may not be all it’s cracked up to be. Second, this puts an enormous amount of importance on “peer pressure.” O how we criticize our children for worrying about what others think of them! Apparently we don’t easily grow out of this trap. Third, there is the neglect of the creative ability of God. Often we take credit for many things we have no control over. Where were you in your creation process?<br />
 <br />
God has created us in his image (Genesis 1.27). That makes us each valuable and beautiful! God showed us our value in giving Jesus for EACH one of us (John 3.16; Romans 5.8; Galatians 2.20). There are no rejects in the kingdom of God!<br />

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt and cried out. The Lord delivered them under the leadership Moses. Not too long after their liberation they began to complain. They expressed their distrust in God as well as Moses. They feared the Egyptians; they complained about the lack of food and water; they complained about the type of food; and they even wished they were back in Egyptian slavery.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The Apostle Paul warns earlier Christians (and us) about this danger in Philippians 2:14 (Amplified Bible), “Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [against God] and questioning and doubting [among yourselves].” He goes on to say that by living without complaining and faultfinding we show ourselves to be God’s children in a wayward world.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">No doubt Paul has in mind bigger things than the weather but even in the little things we need to stand out by blessing God instead of cursing. Is he not in control of all things? It is easy for me to criticize the Hebrews for their lack of faith and criticisms of God but I can also fall into the same trap. Instead of whining in self-pity, I should be dining on the words and promises of God!</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> How did you feel when you heard the news about this enemy of America? Maybe you felt relief. Maybe you felt gratitude towards the warriors who risked their lives in finding him. Maybe you felt some exuberance at the thought of one less enemy.</p>
<p>The Bible teaches that there is great joy in the presence of God when a sinner repents and returns to him (Luke 15.7). I wonder what the atmosphere of heaven is when one does not repent and then through death returns to him. Do you suppose there is sadness for the impenitent in the same proportion as the joy of the penitent? Do you think God is delaying the return of Jesus and the accompanying judgment of the world because he does not want any to be lost (Luke 12.49-50; 1 Peter 3.21)?</p>
<p>Don’t get me wrong, I fancy myself a bit of a patriot. I am all for meting out justice to people who initiate and rejoice in the suffering and deaths of innocent people. However, it bothers me to think about the sorrow that must be in heaven when <span style="text-decoration: underline;">anyone</span> enters eternity without a Christ-based relationship with God.</p>
<p>We serve an unimaginable God. He is filled with grace and longsuffering toward us. However, he is also a just God who will one day rightly judge the world. Will we live our lives so that there is joy over us or sorrow?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A woman for many years couldn’t sleep at night because she worried that her home would be burglarized. One night her husband heard a noise in the house, so he went downstairs to investigate. When he got there, he found a burglar. The husband said to the burglar, &#8220;Come upstairs and meet my wife. She has been waiting 10 years to meet you.&#8221;</p>
<p>A real burglar can steal from you once. Worry can steal from you night after night and for many years. Worry not only steals our sleep, but it also steals our health and our abilities to cope with life productively.</p>
<p>Jesus reminds us to trust God over worrying for ourselves. He urges us not to worry about the necessities of life. Instead, put God first and the things we need will come (Matthew 6:31-34). He is not saying to be irresponsible, but to live by faith.</p>
<p>Do you believe him? In these economically difficult times can we trust God? Can we make him the priority of our lives? I wonder what would happen if we did . . . .?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A man went into the Military right out of High School. He came into contact with pornography. Even though he became a disciple of Jesus and later a Minister, periodically the images he had seen as a young man would come to mind. He prayed. He fasted; he wept he tried everything he could think of to remove those images from his mind.</p>
<p>One day he hit on a new approach. He began memorizing scriptures. Every time one of those images popped in his mind, he would quote a scripture. Before too any days, he said that the Enemy stopped sending those images because they called him to the words of God. The word of God replaced the images of evil.</p>
<p>Often preachers are quick to tell us our wrongs; but not so quick to tell us how to deal with them. This story reminds us of how important it is to put the right things into our lives. It also shows us a way to combat the Devil when he tempts us. Just as Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4; Luke 4), we are able to defeat him with the power of God’s word.</p>
<p>I encourage you to start memorizing verses in the Bible. Then, through the day recite them. Know that God has power within his word (Romans 1:16).</p>
<p>I have stored up your word in my heart,<br />
   that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Maybe you heard the story of the little old lady who was amazed at how nice her young next door neighbor was. Every day he would help her gather things from her car or help her in her yard. One day, the old lady finally asked the young man, &#8220;Son, how did you become such a fine young man?&#8221;</p>
<p>The young man replied, &#8220;Well, when I was a boy, I had a drug problem.&#8221;</p>
<p>The old lady was shocked. &#8220;I can’t believe that.&#8221;</p>
<p>The young man replied, &#8220;It’s true. My parents drug me to church every time the doors were opened.&#8221;</p>
<p>I will grant you that sitting in church services will not guarantee that a person will become a faithful follower of Jesus any more than sitting in a garage will make us cars. However, there IS power in the words and presence of God. He has the power to change hearts and lives. The closer we get to him, the better off we will be.</p>
<p>Sometimes it takes dragging ourselves (or our families) to church, even if the weather is bad or we don’t really feel like it. Nine out of ten times, we are glad we did.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the earliest stories of heroism I can remember was that of the Alamo. It was the first movie that my parents allowed me to see alone (the one with John Wayne, that is). The story still stirs me, and every time I am in San Antonio, I try to go by and visit that shrine.</p>
<p>The small group of about 200 Texans withstood the siege of Santa Anna and his vast Mexican army – to the end. Great names come to mind – Crockett, Travis, Bowie are the better known. Each man who took a place in those ranks is no less a hero.</p>
<p>Weather permitting, I will fly the flag of Texas independence on Sunday, March 6, to mark the anniversary of the fall of the Alamo. I want to remember the men who paid the ultimate price for the cause in which they believed. In April, a few days later, Texas finally achieved her independence at San Jacinto – thanks in part to the sacrifice of those brave men at the Alamo.</p>
<p>Do you have a cause to which you are that committed? Jesus laid down his life for all of us (Romans 5:8). The apostle Paul committed to that same cause his life and his death (2 Timothy 4.6-8). It is the cause of ultimate freedom (John 8:31-32) and life (John 10:10). For what are you willing to give your all?</p>

<p>A wife woke up one morning and said, “Honey, I just had a dream that you bought me a new gold necklace. What do you think it means?”</p>
<p>“I don’t know, but Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Tuesday, you’ll know,” He replied.</p>
<p>A few nights later, she again woke up after having a dream, “This time, I dreamed you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?”</p>
<p>“You’ll know Tuesday,” He replied.</p>
<p>The night before Valentine’s Day, she again woke up telling him about her dream, “This time I dreamed that you brought me a diamond necklace. What do you think it means?”</p>
<p>“Honey, be patient. &#8220;You’ll know tonight.&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>That evening, the husband came home with a package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it&#8211;to find a book entitled, &#8220;The Meaning of Dreams.&#8221;</p>
<p>Valentine’s Day is fast approaching! We think of relationships and increasing our affection for one another. We give gifts to show our love. Yet, we realize that God gave us the real gift of love in his son (John 3:16). It is a gift of extravagance towards us (Ephesians 2:1-10). It is also a gift that is practical in its nature (Titus 2:10-14).</p>
<p>We have a unique privilege of enjoying the love of God in his son. We also have a responsibility to reciprocate that love (Matthew 22:36-40).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you put any ten chickens into a pen, an interesting thing happens in a short time. Through a series of skirmishes, a “pecking order” is established. Instinctively the chickens decide who the top chicken is all the way down to the lowly tenth place chicken.</p>
<p>This hierarchical thinking is not limited to the barnyard. It seems to be in every arena. It is in our businesses, schoolyards, sporting events, family picnics, class reunions, and even in our churches. There seems to be something in us to want to be the one to “call the shots.”</p>
<p>Jesus opposed the pecking order. Every time the disciples tried to set one, he stopped them (Luke 9:46-50; Mark 9:33-37; Luke 22:24-30). The bottom line for Jesus was not getting the prestige of power, but SERVING. He said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last and servant of all (Mark 9:35).</p>
<p>How is that for radical leadership? It goes against our natural way of doing business. Yet, when we try it, it pays off. Why do we follow Jesus? It is because he became the servant to all of us and we want to go where he has gone. After all, HE knows how to get there!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is an old story of two men sharing a meal. One says, “You are my best friend. I really love you, brother!” The second man replies, “O yeah, if you really love me, tell me where I hurt.”</p>
<p>Mutually listening and regarding one another is key to true friendships. If we really love a person, we know where that person hurts. They know where we hurt. It is even true of our relationship with God.</p>
<p>Psalm 116:1-2 reads, “I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me,    therefore I will call on him as long as I live.” God knows our pain. He is the answer to our deepest plea.</p>
<p>Here is the interesting part – we reciprocate that same love and concern. We learn where God’s pain is. Then, because of our love for him, share in it.</p>
<p>God has pain regarding the lost state of people (Romans 10:1-2; John 3:16). He hurts when we do not fulfill the “law of Christ” by bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:1-2). He feels for those in need, even the least of his brothers (Matthew 25:31-46). When we neglect or violate his word we bring him sorrow (Psalm 119:105).</p>
<p>A relationship or covenant goes two ways. As friends of God, what shall we do when we know His pain? He knows ours and has provided aid. We know His and we . . . ?</p>

I wish that he’d finally forgive me.&#8221; There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, &#8220;Your wish has been granted.&#8221; The genie continued, &#8220;You know that most men would have asked for wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because you are old and dying?&#8221; &#8220;No way!&#8221; the man said. &#8220;But my brother is, and he’s worth about $60 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reason? Have you tried to appear one way so that you could manipulate people into your way? It is easy to do. Yet, there is a better way.</p>
<p>The Bible teaches us to do the right thing for the right reasons. Sometimes we must do what is right when it makes us uncomfortable. We tell the truth instead of lying. We hold our tongues instead of speaking wrongly (is that a trick or what? See James 1.26). There are many such examples for us to learn and live by.</p>
<p>Do you have relationships that you need to renew? Do you have sins you need to put behind you? Then, do what you need to do – just because it is right.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A woman once posed the question, “What would have happened if there had been wise <em>women</em> instead of wise men who had set out for the birth of Jesus?” She then answered her question, “First, they would have immediately asked for directions so they would have arrived in time for the birth (not as long as two years later); second, they would have helped deliver the baby; third, they would have cleaned the stable; fourth, made a casserole; and last, they would have brought ‘cute little outfits’ for Jesus to wear home.”</p>
<p>While that is an amusing way to look at the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, the truth is men did come from afar for a very serious purpose in presenting their special gifts of worship to the Son of God. We do not know much about these men. We don’t know exactly who they were or where they came from. We don’t know how many came. We do know they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus (Matthew 2:9-11).</p>
<p>The story of these three gifts reminds us of how we are to be devoted to Jesus. We need to make the effort to search for Jesus (Jeremiah 29:13). When we find him, we must present him with the best we have – our hearts, souls, and might (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Matthew 22:37-38; Mark 12:29-30).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In 1857, four young Irishmen began a weekly prayer meeting. The next year, more prayer meetings started and “Revival” was the common theme of preachers. The next year, 100,000 people converted into the churches of Ireland. This was the beginning of the “Ulster Revival of 1859.”</p>
<p>As a result of the Revival, some significant things occurred. By 1860, crime was reduced and judges often had no cases to try. One county in Ireland reported no crime and the no prisoners were held in the jail. In addition, church services were packed with people, there was an abundance of prayer meetings, family prayers increased, Scripture reading was unmatched, Sunday Schools grew, people stood firm for God, giving increased, vice abated, and crime was reduced significantly.</p>
<p>It seems that there are periods of vibrancy in our churches and then periods of decline. This is an oft repeated cycle among God’s people. Where would you say we are today?</p>
<p>I want to challenge us to a more intentional walk with God. Let us bathe our lives in prayer, asking for God to breathe life into our land. Remember the famous passage:</p>
<p>“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7.14)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Samuel Whittemore was an American hero in the early days of the Revolution. He had come to America as a British soldier during the conflict with France. He loved the Colonies and decided to stay and purchased a farm in Massachusetts.</p>
<p>Sam believed in American independence and took up arms against the British. On April 19, 1775 the 80 year old warrior joined the Minutemen to attack the British on their retreat to Boston following the battles of Lexington and Concord. He chose a strategic spot on the road and at just the right time fired his musket into the British line. He then fired two pistols at the soldiers and then wielded his old saber against the Redcoats. After inflicting casualties, he was wounded and beaten by the British and left for dead.</p>
<p>Following the conflict Sam’s neighbors came to tend the wounded. They found him not only alive, but trying to reload his musket! They brought him to the doctor, who gave them no hope of survival. To everyone’s surprise, Sam did survive and lived another 13 years!</p>
<p>We might question Sam’s tactical judgment but we can never question his courage or his patriotism! You know veterans of the same caliber as Mr. Whittemore. It is because of these bold patriots that we enjoy God’s liberties! Thank a Veteran for serving!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you glad the elections are over? I am, too. However, our vigilance is just beginning. We must hold our political leaders accountable to “We the people.”</p>
<p>One of the personal stories that caught my attention last night was that of Marco Rubio. He was elected to the U. S. Senate by Floridians. In his victory speech he mentioned that he was the “son of exiles” from Cuba. What a great American success story! This IS the place where extraordinary things can happen!</p>
<p>I am reminded by his words that we too are children of exiles. Our parents, Adam and Eve, were exiled from the Garden of Eden. In their case, it was their own sin that led them away from the tree of life. Yet, God provided a way to bring us back.</p>
<p>Jesus is the “way, the truth, the life” who leads us back to the Father (John 14:6). Jesus is the source of the extraordinary in our lives. Jesus is the key to real success in our lives (Matthew 22:34-40).</p>
<p>Marco Rubio and his family may never get back home to Cuba. Unless dramatic changes occur there, they may not want to go. We can, however, “go home” to God. Jesus made that possible for us. In a little while, our exile will be over and we can enjoy the eternal presence of our God (see Revelation 22)!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this election year I have been thinking and studying a lot about the early beginnings of our country. The Founders practiced Christianity and established a nation based on the Bible. They declared:</p>
<p>“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the <strong>consent of the governed</strong>,” (<em>Declaration of Independence</em>, emphasis added).</p>
<p>As I read these words, I see a key biblical principle. Governments are to rule by the consent of the governed because God does.</p>
<p>God is the Creator and King of the Universe. However, He gives us free will. He wants us to choose his rule and thereby governs us by consent (Joshua 24:14-15). He does not force Himself on us and will allow us to walk away (John 6:66-67). Of course the real irony is that there is nowhere else to go (John 6:68; Matthew 7:13-14).</p>
<p>How have you enjoyed removing God from our classrooms and other public places? Has our education level risen or fallen without Him? He won’t force his way in, but will allow us to reap the consequences of our choices.</p>
<p>It is a shame to see how far we have gone from God in our country. No longer can we legally pray in public gatherings. We are not supposed to speak freely in our churches about governmental issues. This was not the intention of the Founders. We must work to put God back at the core of our nation.</p>
<p>When you vote Tuesday, vote your Christian values. Vote for the people who will uphold the words of God in our government. Consent to be governed – by God!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thirty-three miners in Chile have been trapped for weeks hundreds of feet underground. At this writing, they are being rescued, one at a time. A rescuer descended into the mine to assist the miners. In turn, they are being lifted to the surface in a small basket. Local onlookers cheer when each one comes out of the basket.</p>
<p>The world is watching with anticipation as each is saved. This is a great “human interest” story. We each can put ourselves in their places. The world has also come to the aid of Chile and the miners and so we are anxious to see if our efforts have prevailed.</p>
<p>What a great picture of God’s rescue of mankind from the disaster of sin! Man has been trapped for generations below layers of sin. Yet, God broke through and sent “survival” items to us. No expense was spared because humans are valuable in the eyes of God (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). He sent rescuers, one in particular, to raise us individually to safety.</p>
<p>Imagine the scene in the heavens as the angelic host looks on as one, and then another is brought safely home. Imagine the rejoicing in the presence of God when even one is redeemed (Luke 15:7. 10). What joy! God has triumphed!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently David and Tiffany Hartley found themselves in danger on Lake Falcon on the Texas-Mexico border. Mexican pirates attacked them and killed Michael. Tiffany was able to get away on her jet ski while being chased by three boats. The area is notorious for being a danger place and others have found themselves in “the wrong place at the wrong time.”</p>
<p>I have an overly simplistic solution. Stay home! If Americans stop traveling to Mexico and spending money there, do you think the Mexican government might try to clean up their country? Economics speaks volumes.</p>
<p>But wait; there is also a spiritual lesson here. How often do we put ourselves into situations that are dangerous to our souls? How often do we flirt with temptations that will ultimately harm us? We put ourselves in the “wrong place at the wrong time.” Then we wonder why we wind up in harsh circumstances and even try to blame God for it!</p>
<p>The overly simplistic solution is to “stay home.” Develop a strong spiritual life that keeps close to God and far from the trappings of temptation. The prodigal son (Luke 15) learned this lesson the hard way. What about us? Do we prefer to stay close to our heavenly Father or involved in things that would take us from Him?</p>

<p>I am sure we can think of something humorous to say about the nose, but that would be too easy of a target to pick. I wonder, however, if he has enhanced smelling capability or if his nose is just large.</p>
<p>Jesus said that if we have eyes to see and ears to hear, we should use them in obeying God. LOOK to the things of God. HEAR the things of God – understand and do them.</p>
<p>It is so very easy in our day to be content with just knowing about God. James reminds us that faith is more than belief; even the demons believe and tremble but are still opposed to God (2.19). Actions must accompany faith (2.17).</p>
<p>It seems pretty pointless to have a big nose and not be able to smell better. It seems pretty pointless to have eyes to see and ears to hear and not use them. It is also pretty pointless to have faith without works.</p>
<p>“Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2.18).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>During the sailing competition in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, the winds were so strong that the sailing crews had difficulty handling their boats. Two sailors of the Singapore team were thrown overboard when their boat capsized.</p>
<p>Canadian, Lawrence Lemieux, was sailing alone nearby in a separate competition. Seeing the two men in distress, he left his race to give aid. He rescued the first sailor, then the second. By the time he had completed the rescue, he was hopelessly behind in his competition.</p>
<p>The Olympic judges awarded Lemieux second place, the position he held when he left the race to help the Singapore crew. In addition, the International Olympic Committee gave him a special award for his heroism.</p>
<p>“It’s the first rule of sailing to help people in distress,” said Lemieux, downplaying the incident.</p>
<p>When we think about God’s actions in the cross, we see his concern for us. The cross was a horrific event for Jesus. Yet, helping distressed people proved to be his motivation.</p>
<p>In his suffering, Jesus he likely quoted Psalm 22. There he offered prayers of loneliness and forgiveness. He presented words of praise as well.</p>
<p>God ALWAYS deserves our praise regardless of our circumstances. He is at the center of all things. May our prayers always praise!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I heard about some residents in a Nursing Home talking about their ailments. One lady was so weak she could hardly lift her cup of coffee. A man had cataracts so bad that he could not see his coffee. One had arthritis so bad that she could not turn her head. The blood pressure medications made another resident dizzy.</p>
<p>One of the group said, &#8220;I guess that&#8217;s the price we pay for getting old. It sure beats the alternative.” &#8220;Thank goodness we can all still drive!&#8221; quipped a woman.</p>
<p>That sounds like someone has their priorities a little out of line. Is that not often true of most of us? The Bible reminds us of the priority of practical prayer. In 1 Timothy 2:1, the Apostle instructs, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” A high priority for Paul was prayer – first of all, and especially for others. This is true on an individual basis and in the public setting of worship.</p>
<p>How are your priorities today? Is prayer a priority? Is it on your list? Who have you prayed for?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I read that the hit movie &#8220;Rocky&#8221; was based on a real life boxer named Chuck Werner, otherwise known as the Bayonne Bleeder (because he bled so easily and freely throughout his fights). Werner was a good fighter, but not a &#8220;great fighter,&#8221; and so when he was scheduled to fight Mohammed Ali almost everyone figured he wouldn’t last through the first few rounds. Even Ali predicted an early knock out – no later than the third round.</p>
<p>Werner prepared for the fight as for no other. When he faced the champion, he surprised everyone and lasted the full fifteen rounds! He took a beating in the process, but he stood his ground. Ali was so impressed that he said, &#8220;There’s not another human being in the world that can go fifteen rounds like that.&#8221; Werner should not have been able to do what he did.</p>
<p>Have you been there? Have you felt like the pressures you are facing are going to pummel you? Do you feel like there is a great Adversary opposing your every move? The truth is, there is.</p>
<p>You can stand, however. “Pressure Praying” is key to preparing and winning the conflicts we face. The early disciples of Jesus were able to do things that they normally would not have been able to do but for their prayers (See Acts 4:23-31; 12:1-17; 16:25-26, etc.). They accomplished amazing things through their prayers. The good news is, we can too! Keep praying!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I read that the CEO of Google said that there is so much information on the internet that people will have to change their names to avoid the consequences to past mistakes in life. This sounds like the epitome of irresponsibility. I want to dance, but I don’t want to “pay the piper.”</p>
<p>How often do we fail to own up to our behavior? How often do we pass on the responsibility for our actions to someone else? It started in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. When God confronted them, Adam blamed Eve; Eve blamed the serpent. The beat goes on.</p>
<p>There is a legitimate new name for us, however. Revelation 3:12 declares that the followers of Jesus will have his new name given to them. That matches the new identity we have in him. We are “new creatures” in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).</p>
<p>As these new creatures in Christ we learn a number of things. First, we are not evolutionary flukes. We have been made and remade by a Creator. Second, as new creatures, we have a new outlook on life. We see that the world in which we live does not revolve around us. The new outlook shows us that all things are for God and His glory (see Isaiah 43:6-7). God is at the center and we, as His creation serve Him.</p>
<p>A third lesson we learn is that we have the opportunity to restart our lives. We get a refreshed beginning. Rather than an arbitrary change of identity as a criminal may have, we get a new identity in Jesus. God blesses and honors us in Him. The old ways pass away and a brand new life stands before us. What a blessing!</p>
<p>God removes the guilt of sin for us. Sometimes consequences remain. We have to own up to and live with those, but they don’t hold us back. The new identity in Jesus gives us hope for the new life and the new world to come.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We know about the pressures of life. They come in the form of relationships, health, finances, and a host of others. The question is not IF these pressures are coming but WHEN? Then the question becomes, HOW do we respond?</p>
<p>One person described our choice. When pressures hit, we can be like a lump of Play Dough. We can let the impact of the pressure leave its mark on us. Or, we can be like the tennis ball. The pressure causes it to go in for a moment but then it bounces back.</p>
<p>A few years ago <strong>Time Magazine</strong> published an article in which physicians stated that there are health benefits to religion. They said that people of faith have a higher survival rate than those who are not. People of faith have lower blood pressure than those who are not. People of faith who attend church regularly have less depression than those who do not. In fact, the suicide rate is four times higher among non-church goers.</p>
<p>So, how do we the handle pressures of life? We need biblical answers for this question. John 17 shows us how Jesus handled the pressures he faced. If we can see what he did and apply it to our lives, maybe we feel less pressure and be healthier people.</p>
<p>Remember, Jesus came to give us “abundant life” (John 10.10). That means NOW as well as heaven later.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I preached, “Take This Job and Love It.” We all have job stresses. One of the ways to help us like our jobs, employers, and fellow workers is to turn our places of employment into “Christian Service Centers” and work with Jesus in mind (Ephesians 6:5-9). When we do, we make our job a ministry by serving others. It becomes more than a paycheck.</p>
<p>It is one thing to stand before an audience and say, “Turn your job into a ministry.” It is another to actually and practically do it. Here is an idea I ran across recently that might be a step in the right direction.</p>
<p>Set up a “piggy bank” (a little box with a slit cut in the top will do). Set it on your desk or another prominent area of your work space. Star putting pocket change in it. If someone asks you about it, you can tell them it is money for a charity (you might even get their help on deciding which one to give to). When you and your fellow workers fill up the bank, send the money to the charity. The start over.</p>
<p>When you make this collection, you have done a service for others and honored God in the process. In addition, you have enabled your coworkers to serve in their contributions, too. Your job has become a place of ministry.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I enjoy playing, “What if?” If you keep reading my blog you will see many aspects of this game. Let’s play one today.</p>
<p>WHAT IF we change our self-image? If someone asked what you do, you would probably describe your occupation. “I am a doctor, lawyer, Indian chief.”</p>
<p>What would happen if we saw ourselves first and foremost as “Disciples of Jesus the Messiah”? Our occupation, rather than our primary self-description becomes our means of support for our life’s primary goal – following Jesus. Our jobs enable us to not only fill our bellies but also to fill our souls. The job gives us the ability to provide the resources we need to build up our spirits and expand the kingdom of heaven in our time.</p>
<p>The people of Jesus’ time, just like today, worked in various occupations. Jesus was a builder. Peter was a fisherman. Yet, they gave themselves to the study, memorization, and teaching of God’s words.</p>
<p>Imagine the scene in Luke 24. Jesus has been resurrected and appears to the two on the Emmaus Road and to his disciples. He instructs them from the scriptures about himself. Later some of the disciples went fishing (John 21) – what do you think they were talking about? My guess is they were talking about the spiritual issues related to their Master, Jesus.</p>
<p>This conversation would probably have been different from what most fishermen would be talking about. Their language was cleaner. Their topics were more than sports and troubles on the job.</p>
<p>That is the change in perspective. If I change from seeing myself as a plumber, accountant, etc., to a disciple who supports his spirituality with this profession, then perhaps I will see a difference in my life, too.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do you remember the old Revolutionary War song, “Yankee Doodle”? In the song, Yankee Doodle stuck a feather in his hat and called it, “<em>macaroni</em>.” Have you ever wondered what pasta had to do with Yankee Doodle’s hat?</p>
<p>This is one of those lost definitions. In the late 18<sup>th</sup> Century, saying something was “Macaroni” was like almost saying it is “<em>phat</em>” or “<em>hot</em>” today. Even those words’ meanings are easily lost in time.</p>
<p>When we study the Bible we can discover words or ideas with which we are not familiar. We either pass over them or we make an educated guess to the meaning. We may develop two entirely different views and both are off base. Yet, we will make them a point of contention without knowing the facts.</p>
<p>The Yankee Doodle legend has to do with the shabbily dressed American soldiers facing the immaculately dressed (Macaroni) British. The Americans stopped at a farm before fighting the Brits. The farmer’s daughter saw their attire and decided to help out. She plucked a chicken and gave the Patriots a feather for their hats. Once they placed the feathers in the brims, they called it “Macaroni.”</p>
<p>Studying the scriptures involves many things. It is more than finding a proof text or two to use in winning an argument. It includes understanding the original intentions of the writers. It involves digging into original meanings of words as well.</p>
<p>Study the scriptures. They testify of Jesus, the source of eternal life (John 5.39). He is the One we follow (John 14.6).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In church circles we talk a great deal about “life after death.” We give the “invitation” (or “altar call”) at the end of a sermon in case someone wants to become a follower of Jesus for what? Typically we say, “And go to heaven when you die.”</p>
<p>The eternal afterlife is a gift from God to all who will follow his Son. It seems in reading the scriptures that this is a given fact. It does not seem to be a dominant incentive to entice people into following Jesus. In fact, as you read through the gospels and the book of Acts, count how many times the speakers use the reward of heaven as a motivation to obey God.</p>
<p>As a Minister, the thought of not being able to use the carrot of eternal life to get people to obey God seems disarming. Yet, as we search the scriptures, we see many people obeying God. Why would they if heaven is treated as a matter of fact and not motivation?</p>
<p>Perhaps we can see that there is a different focus given by the Messiah, Jesus and his disciples. They did preach eternal life, but that life is not just some far off event. The gospel to them was more than fire insurance against hell. The message they preached involved life NOW.</p>
<p>Eternal life begins when we walk with God. Jesus said He is the key to abundant life (John 10:10). Note John’s use of “eternal life” as present, not merely future in <strong>1 John 5:11-13</strong>.</p>
<p><strong><sup>11</sup></strong>And this is the testimony that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. <strong><sup>12</sup></strong> Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.  <strong><sup>13</sup></strong>I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.</p>
<p>What would be the enticement to follow Jesus if we do not emphasize the afterlife? Perhaps we can take a lesson from the Messiah and see that the abundant, eternal life not only begins in our walk with him, it impacts every aspect of our lives. We become transformed people. We see life through a new set of eyes. We do not despair over every little thing. We have a hope that the world does not have and a life worth living NOW as well as in the resurrection (see <strong>John 11:24-27</strong>).</p>
<p>Maybe instead of asking, “Do you believe in life <em>after</em> death?” we should be asking, “Do you believe in life <strong>BEFORE</strong> death?”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently Richard May mentioned in a sermon that if we spent the same amount of time in our formal schooling that we do in our formal church Bible classes, we would be in First Grade for twenty-four years! As I heard that I thought, “What would happen if our public schools could help us with our Bible study? How much quicker could we grow if we had at least one class per day in Bible study as well as our church time, family time, and personal time?” That is a reason that many people choose to send their children to Christian schools or home school.</p>
<p>Then it hit me. That is EXACTLY what the Founding Fathers intended for our education system. They knew the power of knowledge. They knew that America was established, as Patrick Henry said, “not on religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.” America was to be a FREE country and it was to be a CHRISTIAN nation. People needed to be able to read so they could study the Bible.</p>
<p>I read that Connecticut once passed a law for their citizens where the authorities would send inspectors to each home in their state. The inspectors would test the children in each household to be sure they could read at the level they were supposed to. If not, the parents were fined. What was their reasoning? They knew that legislators need accountability. They determined that if the people could read, they would be able to read the laws that were being passed by Congress. If those laws did not match the Bible, the people could protest and have the laws removed.</p>
<p>The New England Primer used the Bible to teach children to read and write. It was written in 1690 and used in one form or another until the early twentieth century. The children learned stories and doctrines from the Bible at an early age. Some were so adept at learning that they were able to enter schools like Harvard and Yale (once Christian schools) while in their early teens!</p>
<p>How far from our moorings we have drifted as a nation! How amazing the wisdom of our ancestors! How can WE get back on track?</p>
<p>Beginning where we are, we must make a more concerted effort to learn and to learn. Most importantly, we must learn the word of God from Genesis to Revelation. We must see His hand in the history of the world and our country. America did not happen by accident. Even men like George Washington realized that Providence established the nation, not the military or political skills of the citizens (see also Zechariah 4:6).</p>
<p>Turn off the TV and slow down. Take time to read the Bible daily. In the words of Jesus, “Could you not tarry one hour?” Knowing the Bible will make all the difference on all the levels!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A contract is a formal or legal agreement. It may take a written form in which two parties come to an agreement and hold each other to it. Entrance into the contract is usually voluntary, but once in, it is impossible to get out of the agreement without violating the contract. One must live up to the stipulations until the end of the contract period. At that point, each party is free to go his own way.</p>
<p>Most Western Christians treat God in this fashion. Typically, we try to “trap” God in his agreement. We legalistically approach him and see that he has made us an offer we really can’t afford to refuse. Then we leap into the agreement. Going through the motions, we try to force God into living up to his side of the deal with little to no real commitment on our part. We reason, “He OWES this to me because I entered into the contract. Does this sound at all familiar?</p>
<p>This gets a little tricky because there are some legal applications to what God offers us. The Bible teaches, though that we cannot earn our salvation or do we deserve it on any level (Ephesians 2:1-10). We cannot earn or receive it from God regardless of what we do to achieve it on a legal level. We violate the “contract” daily but expect exemptions. We cannot simply comply with a few rules or regulations and demand blessings from the Creator of the universe.</p>
<p>We are actually in a covenant relationship with God. While there are legalities within it, there is an emphasis on relationship over law. We see covenants all through the Bible. God made covenant with Adam; by means of Noah; in Abraham; by way of Moses; and especially in and through Jesus. A key to covenants that came by these men is the relationship that God wanted with his people. The covenant expresses contractual obligations but create a relationship between the parties.</p>
<p>In Luke 22:20, Jesus said, &#8220;This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” The fullness of the covenant is seen in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Jesus expresses the ultimate aspect of relationship by his willingness to pour out his blood (a sacrifice) for his people. He expresses relationship as well as contract obligations.</p>
<p>Maybe the story of the “loving Father” in Luke 15 can better express this. Both the “prodigal” (i.e., wasteful) son and the older brother treat their father in a legal way. The younger son declares, “Give me what is mine.” He expected his legal rights in the form of his early inheritance, even though this was highly insulting to the father. In essence, the son is saying he wishes his father was dead and that he preferred stuff over his parent. The older brother also winds up with an inheritance. However, as the story unfolds, the father (obviously representing our heavenly Father) expresses a covenant relationship with his sons which supersedes contractual obligation. Because the father loves the sons, he is willing to humiliate himself with both of them and went beyond the law to restore relationship.</p>
<p>This is exactly what the Father has done for us through Jesus. What do we deserve as sinful children? The obvious answer is death (Romans 3:23; 6:23). If God was merely a contract lawyer, that is what we would get. He is, instead, a loving Father. He desires relationship with us (your guess is as good as mine as to why). Therefore, God establishes a covenant with us which is ratified in the blood of his Son. He actually took on the whole legal obligation of the covenant because we cannot (also see Genesis 15 when God ratified the covenant with Abraham by taking the Abraham’s responsibility as well as His own).</p>
<p>Let’s live beyond contractual obligations with God. That is what we want in our homes, why not in God’s household? Even the Torah states we are to LOVE God (Deuteronomy 6:4-9), not just abide by a set of rules. Jesus states it this way in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I used to want to do something GREAT for God. I wanted to be a Moses or a Samuel or a Daniel. I have changed my mind.</p>
<p>I did not change my mind because of stress. I imagine that any of the great Bible characters lived with constant stress and turmoil in their lives. It appears that Moses had (or at least approached) nervous breakdowns on occasion. Daniel had to walk the tightrope with the king and THE King. Every one of those guys was the “cream that rose to the top” but did so in very trying times. But, that’s not my reason.</p>
<p>I changed my mind because I have come to realize that God did not make me a Moses. He already had one. There was already a Samuel and an Elijah, or whoever else you want to name. God makes some of us to do things with high visibility. He makes others of us to do more hidden things (Romans 9:20-24; Isaiah 64; Jeremiah 18). Rather than complain because I am not “an eye” (1 Corinthians 12:14ff) shouldn’t I just be who I am? Isn’t that a greater responsibility than trying to be someone I am not?</p>
<p>The real task of my life is to learn who God had in mind when he made me. Once I have made that discovery I can more aptly live up to HIS expectations of me. A by-product will be a fuller life with a deeper commitment to my God. Is that not what Jesus said the first command involved?</p>
<p>God is not going to condemn me for my lack of Moses-like qualities. He will not criticize me for not being Jeremiah’s equivalent in our day and time (how rough would that be?). He only expects me to be me and live up to his Instructions.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I recently read of Marine Gunnery Sergeant, Nick Popaditch.  Sgt. Popaditch (his friends nicknamed him, “Gunny Pop”) is running for a Congressional seat in a California district that borders Mexico. This decorated Marine veteran fought in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and, more recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom.</p>
<p>In 2003, Popaditch&#8217;s unit helped topple the Saddam Hussein statue in Baghdad&#8217;s Firdos Square. He was awarded the Silver Star for combat action in Fallujah after he was hit in the head by a rocket-propelled grenade and blinded in one eye on April 7, 2004, during Operation Vigilant Resolve. The blast left him with only eight percent vision in his other eye. A proud Marine, Popaditch now sports a prosthetic eye emblazoned with the Marine Corps&#8217; eagle, globe and anchor logo.</p>
<p>I have to say that I am impressed with America’s Patriots. Popaditch and others have put themselves in harm’s way for the cause of Freedom and the safety of America. Unlike the Vietnam days, Americans tend to appreciate these veterans and their sacrifices. Maybe we are realizing that the cost of Freedom is high for each generation.</p>
<p>It is too bad that so many of our politicians can’t see what Sgt. Popaditch can in spite of his vision impairments. He knows the value of America to the world. He knows that if America goes down the hope for freedom will be lost to countless peoples all over the world. America has to stay strong. America has to follow its Constitution. America has to resolve to be the people our Founders intended for us to be.</p>
<p>If you read the original writings of the Founders you will see a great emphasis on character. I personally do not believe that they intended for Americans to check their character at the door of the Capitol or the Oval Office and resort to deceptive behavior as our current Administration does.</p>
<p>John Jay, America’s first Supreme Court Chief Justice said, “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”</p>
<p>Patrick Henry stated, “Bad men cannot make good citizens. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience are incompatible with freedom.”</p>
<p>Thomas Jefferson (yes, Thomas Jefferson) said, “The only foundation for useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion.”</p>
<p>The Founders knew that only GOOD PEOPLE can lead a GOOD NATION.</p>
<p>“Gunny Pop,” good luck in your quest for a Congressional seat. We need dedicated patriots to lead our country. Certainly the Marine Corps (pronounced as ‘core’ not ‘corpse’) emphasizes honor and integrity as they develop quality citizens.</p>
<p>Why leave it up just to “the Corps”? Isn’t this a call for ALL Americans? Shouldn’t we All develop integrity? Shouldn’t we all base our actions on a code that is higher and greater than we? Isn’t this where the word of God impacts our lives and our way of life (2 Timothy 3:16-17).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you noticed that some church people are not fond of Jewish people? Christians at times can be highly anti-Semitic. Why do you think that is?</p>
<p>One person told me that she did not like Jews because they crucified Jesus, or at least initiated it. Another said that he did not like Jews because they still reject Jesus as the Messiah. These ideas set me to thinking about Jewish-Christian relationships.</p>
<p>Without getting too far into Christian atrocities toward the Jews, it seems interesting that Christians have little animosity toward the Italians. Pilate and his Roman Legions had a significant role to play in the death of Jesus. They were just as guilty as Jews in his crucifixion. In addition, there are hosts of Italians who do not believe in the Jesus of the New Testament.</p>
<p>A question comes to mind. <em>Which</em> of the Jews actually wanted Jesus to die? It was not his Jewish disciples – not the 12; not the 120. It was not the Essenes. It was not the Pharisees. It would not have been the Zealots. It was not the working class. The group primarily responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus was the Sadducees.</p>
<p>The Sadducees are noted for their disbelief of the resurrection and angels (they are “Sad, You See”). They did not believe in the Oral Law as did the Pharisees (and Jesus). They were primarily the Priests of the day headed by Annas and Caiaphas. They made a great deal of money trafficking in the religion of the Jews. This was done at the expense of the individual worshiper. Jesus was a threat to them and their financial gain (“It’s the Economy, Stupid!”)</p>
<p>Let’s go another step. Consider this. The priests had some significant duties according to the book of Leviticus. They tended the altar fire. They made the ritual sacrifices of animals. They determined the cleanness of animals and people. They determined leprosy and the healing of leprosy in individuals and mold in the homes. They had a great number of things to do, especially where the tabernacle and temple were concerned. At Passover and Day of Atonement, and daily, they made the animal sacrifices – the blood of the innocent for the cleansing of the guilty. These sacrifices foreshadowed to the death of Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29).</p>
<p>Isn’t it fitting that the Sadducees (priests) would be responsible for the death of Jesus? They were the ones charged with making the sacrifices. They would be the ones to initiate Jesus’ once for all sacrifice (see John 11:49-53). These priests offered up the Lamb of God for the sake of the nation and the world (John 3:16).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last night I watched “The Diary of Anne Frank” on our PBS channel. This is part of the Holocaust remembrance as this month marks the 65<sup>th</sup> anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day. The allies liberated many concentration camps during this month in 1945.</p>
<p>General Eisenhower did some very good things in this regard. He had the camps and inmates photographed for posterity. He knew that people would deny it had ever happened if there was not photographic evidence as proof. He was right; people are denying it today. He also had his troops bring the nearby townspeople for a tour of the camps so they could see what they had allowed to happen by their passivity.</p>
<p>As I watched the movie’s reenactment of the Franks and others hiding in a relatively nice Amsterdam attic space, I wondered about some things. As Jews, they were required to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothes. You will recall of the Nazi’s contempt for Jews. This was due to a number of issues, but they and others became the “scapegoats” for everything that was wrong with Germany.</p>
<p>The Nazis told the public that the Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus and they wanted everyone to be aware of who was guilty of that atrocity. It is interesting to me that the Italians seem to have had a hand in the death of Jesus with Pilate’s sentencing and the soldiers carrying out the order. Italy was a part of the Axis (Germany, Italy, and Japan), so Hitler could not very well stir up his citizens against them. It had to be the Jews.</p>
<p>What would it be like if I was forced to wear a cross on all of my clothing? This would not be a designer look but something to make me stand out to pagans who did not like Christians. Maybe they would use some kind of excuse regarding the worship of the Earth or the worship of an ungodly President as their reason for turning their ire on Christians. What would I do?</p>
<p>What would I do if that persecution was to the death? Would I stand and take it, or deny my faith? Would I go into hiding and hope for the war to pass? If I went into hiding, could I withstand the daily rigors of the possibility of being caught?</p>
<p>Millions of Jews died during the holocaust simply because they were the descendants of Abraham. Many courageously faced their end with the words of the “Sh’ma” on their lips. “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. . .”</p>
<p>There are real persecutions going on in the world today. People are dying in Oriental and Arabic countries because of their belief in Jesus. What if it happened in the good old USA? “That could never happen!” you say? Why not? If it was to happen here, what would I do?</p>

		<title>Keep the FIRE Burning!</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, were among those chosen by God to be his priests. However, they were executed by God for bringing “strange fire” to him (see Leviticus 10.1). Does it make you wonder what that fire was like? Was it the wrong color? Was its temperature wrong? What was “strange” about it?</p>
<p>Among other things, the Levites had been given an important task of keeping the Tabernacle’s and Temple’s fire going – always. In Leviticus 6:13, God told them, “The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.” They used this fire to burn the morning and evening sacrifices and all the ones in between. In addition, the priests would light the menorah with it and use its coals to burn the incense.</p>
<p>The altar fire was from the Lord. It was intended for HIS use. No other fire was to be used. If the priests brought in unauthorized fire, it was considered “strange fire.” Thus, when Nadab and Abihu brought in their strange fire, it was without God’s authorization.</p>
<p>To American Christians this may seem trivial. Fire is fire, right? What difference does it make <em>where</em> we get it? It all burns and does the required job.</p>
<p>While fire may be fire, God is not just a god. He is supreme and deserves respect and love. Who are we to trivialize ANY of his instructions? Who are we to replace anything he has revealed to us?</p>
<p>God teaches and tests us with his commands. His words carry symbolism as well as practical applications. If we violate one, we violate the other. If we omit a small one, we will likely omit larger ones. It is just a matter of time (Luke 16:10).</p>
<p>Let us keep his fire burning in our lives. That is the fire that comes from him and cannot be replaced by any worldly allure. It is a fire of passion (Jeremiah 20:9). It is a fire of love and respect (Matthew 22.34-40).</p>

<p>One of the more mundane activities of the Levitical priests was the removal of the ashes of the sacrificial animals from the altar. I read that during the period of the second temple, priests would race to claim the privilege of ash removal. They must have been the younger priests!</p>
<p>What would make those men compete to dispose of these ashes outside of the city? It was a dirty job. It was a tedious job. It was not a sensational job, but it had to be done.</p>
<p>This was a small part of the worship of God. The upper echelon of priests, particularly the High Priest, would be a lot more glamorous to us. Can you imagine our most popular TV evangelists in a foot race to win the privilege of ash removal?</p>
<p>When we consider the instructions of God, we may be tempted to overlook the simple things. We may not want to have a hand in the “small” things God ordains. We may prefer the attention-getting activities over the “lesser” ones. Yet, God teaches that his “small” commands are not to be overlooked.</p>
<p>What would our churches be like if we developed an attitude of accentuating the small? What would it be like to have “competitions” to: fill communion trays; empty the trash; clean the fellowship hall; or teach Jr. High? This attitude has the power to transform a Christian community.</p>
<p>Jesus said, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much” (Luke 16:10). Too often we want the much before we master the little. If we can learn not to overlook the little, God will give us much in due season – “if we faint not.”</p>
