Knowing and Doing

May I confess one of my many flaws to you? I like to learn about things in the Bible. Sounds harmless, right? Here is the flaw – I often like to learn to the exclusion of DOING. You might say that I am “educated above my level of obedience.” I KNOW more than I PRACTICE.

We certainly need to study the words of God. These words can help us avoid difficulties. There are numerous passages that remind us of this. Ezra 7:10 reads, “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” Note the progression – learning – doing – teaching.

One of the traps we may fall into is thinking that if we just know enough we will avoid having to deal with the issues in real life. Whatever the temptation may be, whether it is the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, or the pride of life, it is not always handled with mere understanding. There are times when we must face the temptation head on, and with the knowledge we have gained from the biblical text, defeat it.

A football team prepares for a game by watching their opponents game films. They learn what they must do to defeat them. Then, they must go out on the field and DO what they know. They have to get into the game.

Hearing Above the Noise

I am sure you have been there. You are at a party, in a restaurant, or at a sports event. You try to have a conversation with the person next to you but the noise level is too high. Maybe your hearing has been damaged. Maybe it’s just loud. In any event, you can’t hear what your friend is saying, or even what YOU are saying.

The Bible repeatedly reminds us to HEAR. Jesus often stated, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” The greatest commandment begins with the word “Hear” (see Deuteronomy 6.4 and Mark 12.28ff).

In the bible, “hearing” not only includes the reception of the sound waves in our ears, but comprehension of what is stated followed by action. Biblical hearing is actually obeying what is spoken. So, when God says to hear that we are to love him with all of our hearts, souls, and might, he means we are to put it into action.

It is no accident that we live in a world full of diversions. How many things each day divert you from the mission of loving God whole-heartedly? Think of the numerous distractions that come from television, just to name one avenue. There are shows we just “can’t miss” each week. Often we spend hours mindlessly viewing – what? Mostly nothing. Our lives are not really enriched by it; we have merely been sidetracked from a higher calling.

Today hear his voice (see Hebrews 3; Psalm 95). Comprehend God by listening to his word (taking the time to read it). Then put it into action in real life. That’s “hearing God.”

Principle or “Pork”?

The other day I ran across a humorous political cartoon. A man is talking with his wife and asks, “If a man yells, ‘You lie!’ in a room full of politicians, how do they know who he is talking to?”

That may have brought a grin to your face. It probably also brought a grimace. The sad truth is many (not all) politicians don’t care about truth, the Constitution, or principles of character.

I can criticize corrupt politicians. So far, along with you, I have the right to assemble and to speak freely, even if our politicians don’t like it. This is the major check and balance that the Founding Fathers understood.

Here is the bigger problem. The leaders we select are a mirror of our culture. They are really our REPRESENTATIVES. If we are a godly people, we will elect godly leaders. If we are ungodly and corrupt. . . .

God said:

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34 (ESV)

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Proverbs 29.2 (KJV)

Part of the solution to political corruption is to be a nation with godly character. This can only occur one person at a time. If you and I determine to be better people, by the grace of God we will become a nation who walks closely to the words of God. We, in turn, elect leaders who lead by principle, not by “pork.”

Character Counts

When we lived in Alabama, the University hired a new football coach. Before the season began he was released from his contract. Not one game had been played, so it was not for a “losing season.” Instead, the man was released for his questionable actions OUTSIDE of the football field. As a result, the University of Alabama struggled through a rough season. In the long run, it paid off with their thirteenth and fourteenth National Championships.

Recently a similar circumstance impacted the University of Arkansas football team. Misconduct off of the field cost the coach his lucrative position. It was not the University’s win-loss record, rather a character issue.

Character is important. When course corrections are in order, they must be made. Leaders, such as coaches, impact the lives of many people. It becomes doubly hard for them. They must perform their jobs and do it with high ideals. One man I know said, “We should always do the right things and do things right.” This is sage advice that pays off in the long run.

James warns us in regard to teaching the Bible: “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1). There is a principle of high expectations for those in leadership positions – doing the right things in the right ways.

An Empty Promise

In the villages of Northern India a missionary was preaching in a bazaar. As he closed, a Muslim gentleman came up and said, “You must admit we have one thing you have not, and it is better than anything you have.”

The missionary smiled and said, “I should be pleased to hear what it is.”

The Muslim said, “When we Muslims go to Mecca we at least find a coffin. But when you Christians go to Jerusalem, which is your Mecca, you find nothing but an empty grave.”

The missionary just smiled and said, “That is just the difference.

Muhammad is dead; he is in the coffin. All false systems of religion and philosophy are in their coffins, but Jesus Christ, whose kingdom is to include all nations and kindred and tribes, is not here; He is risen. And all power in heaven and on earth is given unto Him. That is our hope.

Annually the Christian world celebrates the empty tomb of Jesus. It was on the first day of the week following Jesus’ last supper that he overcame death itself. In so doing, he gives those who follow him hope.

Remember the words of the angel:

⁵But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.⁶He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.⁷Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” Matthew 28:5-7

“Behold the Lamb Sunday”

This Sunday is referred to as “Palm Sunday.” It marks one week before the “Easter” celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. It also is the day we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Here he fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah 9.9, as he humbly rode into the city on a borrowed donkey to face his crucifixion.

There is another aspect to this day that becomes a key to the events surrounding Jesus’ death. A few days before the Passover meal, according to Exodus 12:1-6 and Leviticus 23:4-14, a family had to select a lamb to offer as their sacrifice. As Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem he not only came to conquer sin and death BUT also to be God’s selected lamb for his atoning sacrifice at the Jewish Passover.

At least twice John the Baptizer said of Jesus, “Behold the lamb” (John 1:29, 36). As Jesus enters Jerusalem God reiterates the declaration. He would visibly demonstrate the power of God in the Passover as God led his people out of the bondage of Egypt to freedom in the wilderness and eventually into the land of promise.

As our “Passover Lamb of God,” Jesus leads us out of the bondage of sin and into freedom. This freedom is in our journey through this world into eternity with God. It is the freedom to serve the living God rather than entanglements of the adversary.

This Sunday, “Behold the Lamb!”

Don’t Quit!

I read that during the Second World War, the Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin fled across Europe from the Nazis. For weeks he made his way through occupied France. Finally he reached his longed-for destination of Spain; from there it would have been possible to escape to America.

There came an unexpected problem. On the day that he arrived, the Spanish border, which had been open, was closed. Benjamin committed suicide in despair. Then one of the most bizarre of paradoxes occurred, the border re-opened the very next day. The closure had been only temporary.

After striving, and running, and hiding, Benjamin had lost hope. He had come to a closed border—there was no way out.

Have you ever “hit the wall”? You have tried everything you can think of – but to no avail. There is a temptation to throw in the towel and just give up. Deep inside we know better.

The apostle Paul had a powerful insight that he shared with us: ¹³Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,¹⁴I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3.13-14).

Things are not always easy in the Christian walk. We don’t always see clearly. We DO have a God who keeps hope alive within us through the gift of his Son. Don’t quit!

A Lot to Learn and Do

Communists know that education is important to a society. They found that it is the primary deterrent to the Communist takeover of a nation. So, when they target a country, they also target its educational system, especially in regard to religion and patriotism. They slip in and revise a nation’s history and remove God from their fabric.

There is an application for Christians. In our battle, our adversary wants to “dumb us down.” He knows the power of the gospel (Romans 1:16). He knows what the proclamation of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection can do for people (1 Corinthians 15). He knows the power of truth in our hands (John 8:32).

Jesus responded to each of Satan’s three tests with, “It is written.” He won the battle (see Matthew 4). Ezra was a great servant of God because . . . Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel” (Ezra 7:10).

We can’t do what God says until we know what he says. Once we know we can’t help but do – if we are living by faith.

How is your daily time with God? What new things are you discovering from his word? What are you doing for others because God has directed your steps?

Don’t get distracted from the call of God.

Is It REALLY the Economy?

During this election year we are hearing all kinds of rhetoric. We hear about the economy is bad. We hear about who is at fault for the economy. We hear proposed solutions. We do not hear much about the real answer.

When the Jews returned from Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem, the temple, and their religious practices they got off track. They started well, but soon they stopped building for God and started building for themselves. Their economy went into a tailspin.

In the little book of Haggai, God declares:

Consider your ways. ⁶You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes (1.5-6).

Does this sound familiar? Gas is supposed to be $5 per gallon soon. This will force increased costs in other industries. We are earning wages that seem to go into a bag with holes in it.

The answer to the problem does not lie only in our political system. It lies in the original foundation of the nation. As a nation, GOD was our foundation in the beginning. We have elected poor leadership for our country and gotten off track because we have left God out of the picture and made it all about US.

Do you want to improve the country? Do you want to make it a better place for our children and grandchildren? The answer begins with each of us determining to live with GOD as the center of our lives. Just as Israel of old, when we honor God, He will honor us.

Wise Americans

One of my favorite Americans was John Quincy Adams. He served America virtually his whole life. He is the only President who became a Congressman AFTER his presidency. In fact, he was so devoted to America that he actually died on duty in the House of Representatives. Note a couple of his quotes:

“The highest glory of the American Revolution was this; it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”

“From the day of the Declaration…they (the American people) were bound by the laws of God, which they all, and by the laws of The Gospel, which they nearly all, acknowledge as the rules of their conduct.”

Adams, as other Founders, saw Americans as a people to put the laws of God into practice on every level within the newly formed country. America was not just a land of opportunity or Liberty. It was a nation that based its existence on the Word of God. Its teachings were to be the standards of conduct within the land.

The Founders knew that “righteousness exalts a nation” (Proverbs 14:34). They knew that the Constitution was not suited for people with no standards for their behavior. They knew that the only “separation of church and state” was that of keeping the government out of the affairs of the churches.

We are seeing numerous erosions of the founding principles of our nation. As a nation, we have chosen economy over spirituality. If we choose spirituality, we would have both. Since we choose money over God, we have neither. Can we see the wisdom of our Founders?

Who Do Men Say I Am? (Sermon Outline)

1. St. John’s University is apparently known for being a theological school where intellectualism is highly regarded. Someone wrote the following graffiti on one of the walls there:

Jesus said unto them: “Who do you say that I am?”

And they replied: “You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the kerygma in which we find the ultimate meaning of our interpersonal relationships.”

And Jesus said: “What?”

Whoever wrote that graffiti was basically complaining about some of the names and expressions that men had invented to try to define Jesus.

2. It is difficult to come up with a one word description of Yeshua (Jesus) – Son of Man; Son of God; Messiah (Christ); Holy One; Nazarene; Prince of Peace; etc.

Worship service; sermons; building; bulletin; leadership; programs

Church is not the place many want to go – bad impressions;

Christians see church as “their” organization — “The church is for ME.”

The difference between a conviction and a preference, according to the U.S. Supreme Court:

A preference is a strong belief, but a belief that you will change under the right circumstances. Circumstances such as: 1) peer pressure; if your beliefs are such that other people stand with you before you will stand, your beliefs are preferences, not convictions, 2) family pressure, 3) lawsuits, 4) jail, 5) threat of death; would you die for your preferences? A conviction is a belief that you will not change. Why? A man believes that his God requires it of him. A conviction is not something that you discover; it is something that you purpose in your heart (cf. Daniel 1-3). The Intersection

In 1999, an insurance company rated the most dangerous intersections for accidents in the United States. The year’s winner (or better, loser) was the corner of Belt Line Road and Midway Road in Addison, Texas. There were 263 reported crashes at that intersection in the Dallas suburb.

Often when I come to an intersection, I think of the people who are meeting there. Some have come a long distance; some short. Yet, we have all arrived at the same time.

Arriving at the intersection, we all have decisions to make. Will we obey the laws or break them? Will we be courteous to other drivers or selfish?

As we travel on our journey through this world we often come to some serious intersections. We repeatedly come to intersections of the “broad” and “narrow” ways (Matthew 7:13-14). Each time we have an important decision to make. Do we choose the narrow way along with the “few” or do we choose the broad way with the “many”? Will we follow the instructions or refuse them? It is a serious choice that demands our attention and exercises our wisdom.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me” (John 14:6). Today, with the rising of the sun, we have made it to yet another intersection. Which road will we take?

Sound Imitation

I was recently sitting in a restaurant and heard a bird chirping. Or, at least so I thought. It was actually a ringtone on someone’s cellphone. I could not help but think of all of the excellent tones people are using today (my phone is the sound of an old telephone – no imagination). These tones are an imitation of something or someone.

In 1820, Charles Caleb Colton coined the phrase that states: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Those words are still true. It is especially true for the life of a disciple of Jesus.

The Christian journey is not just a life that doesn’t “cuss or smoke or drink or chew or go with girls who do.” It is a life given to the imitation of Jesus himself. A disciple of a rabbi would give all he had to become just like his rabbi. That is what we are called to do. Paul said it this way to his disciples, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11.1)

This is especially evident in the trials we encounter. I understand that a jeweler has a sure-fire test to establish a diamond’s authenticity. He places the jewel under water. A true diamond will always out-sparkle an imitation. In fact the imitation will lose its sparkle.

Tests come and go. What do they reveal? They may reveal the real image of Jesus in our lives or they may reveal a cheap imitation. Who am I trying to imitate? What am I trying to become?

Years ago, a famous actress named, Billie Burke was on a cruise when she noticed that a gentleman at the next table was suffering from a bad head cold. She asked him, “Are you uncomfortable?” The man nodded.

She said, “Go back to your room and drink lots of orange juice, take two aspirins, cover yourself with all the blankets you can find and sweat the cold out. I know what I’m talking about; I’m Billie Burke from Hollywood.”

The man smiled and said, “Thanks.” Then he added, “By the way, I’m Dr. Mayo from the Mayo Clinic.”

When it comes to medical matters, I would prefer to take the advice of an esteemed doctor over that of a famous actress.

Likewise, when it comes to spiritual matters, we have choices. We can look to celebrities. We can look to those we regard as “wise”. We can look to the stars (astrology). We can even look to the angels. Or we can look to Jesus Christ. It should not be a difficult choice.

Jesus Christ is superior in every way (Hebrews 1.4; 3.56-6). He is the Son of God, the Lord of lords and King of kings. He is God. He creates, sustains, governs, redeems and cleanses us of sin. He is the one to be worshiped by the angels. He is omniscient, omnipotent, unchanging and eternal. Why would you look anywhere else?

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” (John 14:6)

“Dedication is Costly”

Bertoldo de Giovanni was the teacher of Michelangelo, perhaps the greatest sculptor of all time. Michelangelo was fourteen years old when he came to Bertoldo. It was obvious that he was enormously gifted. Bertoldo was wise enough to realize that gifted people are often tempted to coast rather than grow. Therefore he kept pressuring his young prodigy to work seriously at his art. One day he came into the studio to find Michelangelo toying with a piece of sculpture far beneath his abilities. Bertoldo grabbed a hammer and smashed the work into pieces, shouting this unforgettable message, “Michelangelo, talent is cheap; dedication is costly!”

Isn’t it tempting to just coast along? We don’t get much or grow much, but it is comfortable. We just “rock along.”

Our challenge is to make our whole life count for God. When our here time is over, will we be able to say we did not hold back? Will we have put our whole effort into what God has placed before us?

Philippians 3.13-14 can inspire us: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Football players have a saying — “leave it all on the field.” It means that during the game they don’t hold anything back. Win or lose, their best effort is in the game, not the locker room. For what will our best efforts be?

Deciding to Jump in 2012

I heard about a dad teaching his son an important lesson. The dad asked, “If three frogs were sitting on a limb over a pool and one frog decided to jump into the pool, how many would be left?”

The son answered, “Two.”

“No,” the dad replied, “There are three frogs and one decides to jump, how many are left?”

“Oh, I get it,” the son said, “It’s like peer pressure, if one decides to jump, they will all jump. So, there would be none left.”

“No, son, the answer is three. One frog only DECIDED to jump.” The dad responded.

Does that sound like any New Year’s resolutions you have heard of? Too often we DECIDE we will make some changes but either we fail to begin or we start and do not follow through.

Maybe weight loss is your resolution. Maybe it is something even more important, getting your relationship back on track with God. Don’t just make the decision, make the decision count and follow through!

Occupy – Where?

Have you kept up with the current “Occupy” protesters? It appears that some want to play “Robin Hood.” They want to take from “achievers” and give to those they deem “entitled.”

Jesus told a parable in Luke 19.11-27 in which a ruler gave money to ten servants. They were to “occupy” (KJV), or “do business” or “busy themselves” until her returned. Some of the servants were productive, at least one was not. Each was rewarded accordingly. The achievers were given privilege and more responsibility. The unproductive one lost what he had (not vice versa).

Jesus IS returning for a day of accounting. While we are of differing abilities (Matthew 25.14-30), he has entrusted us with a common task while we wait: do business/occupy with the message of the Kingdom of Heaven (1 Thessalonians 2.4; 1 Timothy 1.11; 6.20).

We are not to be idle as we wait for the return of Jesus; we are to be on the offensive to advance his Kingdom (Matthew 16.18). His disciples have tasks to do. We are taught to love God supremely – that is action, not just emotion. We are to actively love our neighbors as ourselves. We care for those who need (Matthew 25.31ff).

The business of the Kingdom of Heaven is different than the business of Wall Street. In fact, God’s business is far more important, far more significant! The Kingdom of Heaven is faith business that impacts the now as well as the eternal. With what are you occupied?

The Order of the Towel

On the night Jesus was betrayed he took a towel and washed the feet of all of his disciples, including the one who would betray him as well as the one who denied him (see John 13). In doing this, he signified his servant spirit. He also showed how his disciples were to be servants to others.

When we think of Jesus we think of a mighty king and a humble servant. We see him serving through his teaching; through healings; through his ability to raise people from the darkness of despair. Ultimately his servant’s heart would take him to the cross to express the love of God in his death, burial, and resurrection.

One of the most enjoyable things I have been a part of was a recent celebration of the volunteer servants at the South Yukon congregation. We had a nice Chick-Fil-A catered breakfast, some amusing entertainment, some gifts, and a presentation of a towel to people who have given their time and energies to a cause beyond themselves. This towel is a reminder of our call to service.

Without our willing servants, our churches cannot function. Where do they get their motivation? What makes them want to sacrificially give of themselves? Why do they “pick up the towel”? It is an imitation of the one who sacrificially served them!

The Great Man Hunter

Last summer, during some of that blistering heat, a man from the Yukon, OK community went missing. Suddenly, police, firemen, paramedics, his family, and a host of volunteers began looking for him. For hours in the heat and even into the evening people searched.

This story is not unique to our community. Over the years we have heard of many intense search and rescue missions. Each branch of the military has stories of finding the misplaced. This is because people are important!

These stories remind me of a great lesson that Jesus taught in Luke 15:1-7. He told of a shepherd who had lost a sheep. Instead of cutting his losses, he left the remaining ninety-nine and went into the dangers of the wilderness to find the one lost sheep. When he found the sheep, he carried it home and had a great celebration with his friends and neighbors.

In the grand scheme of things some of us may be like the lost sheep of the story. We know we are lost, but are clueless as to how to go home without the leading of our Shepherd. The reality is that God has initiated the search process and mapped out the way of salvation for us. His grace is so strong that it is as if he is carrying us to a great celebration of salvation!

This week’s sermon deals with this great story. I am calling it, “Sometimes I Get Carried Away!” Come and share in the truth that God cares intensely for YOU! YOU are important to him! How important? Enough to give his all!

Tornados and Earthquakes and Drought, O, My!

Now let me get this straight. Oklahoma has tornados, excruciatingly hot and dry summers, bitterly cold winters with record-setting blizzards, and O yeah, even effects of hurricanes (I don’t mean the University of Tulsa, either). In addition, we are now experiencing earthquakes! I guess Oklahoma has something for everyone.

In recent days there have been a number of tremors in Oklahoma. Many people immediately thought of the end of the world as they shook in their homes. Can the earthquakes be a sign of the end?

It is evident in the Bible that earthquakes were of significance. Elijah looked for God in the earthquake, but he was not there (1 Kings 19). Ezekiel experienced a vision from God that incorporated an earthquake (see chapter 3). Amos 1 and Zechariah 14 recount a devastating earthquake in the history of Israel. Jesus warns of earthquakes in Matthew 24 and at his crucifixion the earth shook (Matthew 27:54).

God may be “sending” earthquakes or they may occur as a sample of nature’s groaning as a by-product of our disobedience (Romans 8:22). However they are coming, they certainly catch our attention and direct us to the One who is in control of all things.

Is Jesus coming soon? That would be great, but we don’t know. In the meantime, we keep our eyes fixed on him (Hebrews 12:1) and prepare for the day we WILL meet him.

Critically Speaking

Have you noticed that we live in a time when people seem to be extremely critical of one another? How often do we see the negative instead of the positive in a person?

Try this little experiment. When you are in a group of your peers, praise an individual who is not among you. Pick out a virtue of this person and brag on him or her to the others. In many (maybe most) cases you will hear something like, “Yeah but . . .” and then the speaker will begin to tear down the individual by pointing out flaws.

The trouble is, we are all flawed. Sin and our sinful tendencies have distorted the image of God in our lives. This is where God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the scriptures come in.

The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39).This includes praising others as we would want to be praised. This would mean protecting the integrity of others as we would want to be protected.

This is not that easy. It takes appreciation for: God’s love for us (by the way, God loves YOU immensely – he told me so in John 3:16); the gift of Jesus – not just on the cross but in showing us how to live out the instructions of God; the Holy Spirit who empowers our lives to follow his inspired scriptures. It comes when we are able to treat others the way God has treated us.

Friends

In ancient times, rabbis said, “When two sit together and exchange words of torah, then the divine presence is among them.” Hear it from Jesus’ perspective: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (Matthew 18:20).

One of the purest forms of worship is study. When we sing or pray, we give God our words. When we study, we receive God’s words. What a great privilege it is to hear, understand, and do the words of God!

It is important to have friends to encourage us along the way. We understand the value of relationships between friends. The wise man said, “A friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17a). But we also have the need to be to become more like Jesus. Again, the writer of Proverbs declares, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

We all need people who will challenge, encourage, and hold us accountable to be better people tomorrow than we are today. We know we need to be godly people. We know we need to be like Jesus and “go about doing good.” Yet how often do good intentions come and go with no results?

I want to encourage you to find friends who will be supportive and challenging to your spiritual life. The disciples did that for each other. We need it, too.

And He Died

I heard about a woman who had invited her husband to attend church with her for years. Sunday after Sunday he declined. Finally one day he decided to attend services with her. She hoped that the preacher would have a good sermon to encourage him. To her chagrin the preacher had chosen the fifth chapter of Genesis which is the lineage from Adam to Noah.

At the end of the service when the invitation was given, her husband went forward. He decided to become a follower of Jesus and was baptized (Acts 2.38; Romans 6.1-4; Galatians 3.27). She was shocked and thrilled!

She asked him what made him decide to become a disciple of Jesus after such a sermon. He responded that in the list all but one of the people died. He realized that he, too would die so he needed to prepare himself to meet God.

Recently Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers, passed away. I know nothing of his beliefs about God but I do know that unless Jesus tarries we will also pass from this life into eternity. Regardless of our level of financial success we will die. We have that promise (Hebrews 9.27). What we do between now and then is of paramount importance!

Get In the Boat!

One of the interesting things to me about heading into the future is that we have to head into the unknown – backwards. Picture a rowing team in a race. The rowers face the stern of the boat to row the boat forward. They see where they have been but do not see where they are going. They are forced to rely on the Coxswain to steer the boat and keep their timing.

This is exactly how God’s people deal with the future events of life. We are not able to see what is coming, but we can see where we have been. We trust Jesus to direct our “boats.” He will avoid the dangerous waters and keep us headed in the right direction.

Some of the Psalms, such as the 105^th recount the nation’s story in its walk with God. Stephen recounted the story in Acts 7 just before the enemies of the cross killed him.

One of the benefits in retelling the story is that we can remember what God has done for us in the past. If he took care of us then, will he take care of us now? Faith says that he will. It is the assurance of things hoped for and evidence of the unseen (Hebrews 11.1).

Is your faith wavering? Do you have doubts? Get in the boat! Let Jesus guide your life, knowing that he is faithful to his people as he directs their lives.

What Are the Odds?

Recently a DJ on the radio announced that an unusual event occurred at the Belmont racetrack on September 11. In the first race the 9^th horse won. In the second race the 1^st horse won. In the third race the 1^st horse won. That made 9-1-1 on 9.11. What are the odds?

People go to Vegas or play the Lottery in an effort to win large sums of money. What are the odds?

Believe it or not, there is a biblical application. Imagine the odds of the accuracy of the Bible if it was not inspired by God. Sixty-six books were written by about forty men over hundreds of years. Yet, the storyline remains intact. Here is a challenge for the skeptics. Go to the library and pull any sixty-six books written by at least forty people over a period of 1500 years. Do they match? Do the stories harmonize?

Here are some more things to consider. What are the odds of the following:

That Micah could predict the exact location of the Messiah’s birth 700 years in advance?
1000 years before Jesus David predicted his betrayal by a friend?
Six centuries before, Zechariah predicted that he would be sold for thirty pieces of silver?
In the eighth century before his coming, Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be born of a virgin?

I am sure you get the point. The coming of Jesus into the world and fulfilling ancient prophecy was no accident. It is not by chance that He is the King of Kings!

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing on September 10, 2001? You probably do not. You may, however, vividly remember where you were when you heard the news about the destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11. We stand on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the destruction of the Towers and the murders of innocent people. We haven’t forgotten the attack on America, nor shall we any time soon.

Perhaps a decade ago you felt fear. Maybe you felt anger. Maybe you felt frustration – or any combination of emotions. Maybe you are reliving some of those emotions this weekend.

The Bible gives us some “911 Passages” to help us in trying times. Please consider the following:

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9.11

¹He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91.1

¹¹Sing praises to the LORD, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds! Psalm 9.11

The circumstances of life come to all of us. Yet, we find shelter in the presence of God. We honor Him by telling of His mighty works.

Earthquakes and Hurricanes – End of the World?

Believe it or not, the Bible addresses such things as storms, famine, and even earthquakes. With the recent tornadoes, earthquakes in Japan and now the United States, along with a hurricane heading for our eastern coast, some people are wondering if these are signs of the end of the world.

This is not new. The disciples of Jesus wondered such things too. They asked him about his coming and the end of the age (Matthew 24:3-14). He told them about international conflict, famines, and earthquakes. He spoke of false prophets and accepted lawlessness as the beginning of the end. Jesus also reminds us that no one but His Father knows the actual final day (24.36).

So, what can we take away from all that we see today? Is Jesus coming? The answer is a resounding, yes! Can we know the exact day? No!

Whether God is personally sending hurricanes and earthquakes into the world or they are just occurring naturally, there is a reminder for us. The end of the world IS coming and we have a window of opportunity to prepare for it. That window is what we call “life.”

Most believers live in anticipation of the return of Jesus. In the Revelation, John wrote, “He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (22:20)

Obscuring “Christ”

On a recent road trip I noticed a local “Church of Christ” building in a small town. It was typical in many ways. One thing, however, stood out. Bushes had grown over the “Christ” part of the sign. All you could read was “Church of.”

This may or may not say something about the priority of their landscaping. It did make me think of a pervasive attitude among many churches. We church people often allow the things of the Church to obscure the Christ. The church’s mission is not self-promotion. It is CHRIST promotion. Our job is to lift Jesus so that people can be drawn to HIM (John 12:32).

Churches can easily develop traditions or actions that are well-intentioned. The danger is that these activities can overshadow Jesus and his purposes just as bushes over the sign. It could be a “sacred cow” ministry. It could be an order of worship. It could be a version of the Bible or any number of things that take our eyes off of Jesus and onto ourselves.

Some Greeks came to Philip and made a request. “Sir, we wish to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Showing Jesus to others is a fundamental element to the life of disciples of the Son of God. People are not necessarily interested in our perceptions about Jesus, they want to see Jesus. Thus, in-depth study of the Bible and clear teaching are essential to seeing Him.

Lifting the Veil

People from all over the world have photographed the spectacular “Mount Taranaki” in New Zealand. Many days of the year clouds obscure the view. Once they have lifted people are amazed at the sight.

This is how I often feel about studying the Bible. There are magnificent truths there. Some of these are very simple and easily seen. Some, however, seem to be covered with a veil of mystery. When this is lifted and we clearly see the realities that God shows us, we are awe-struck by His beauty.

Jesus spoke of eating of his body and drinking of his blood in John 6. Some of his disciples said that it was a “hard (difficult) saying” and walked away from him. When his closest disciples refused to leave Peter gave the reason, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,” (6:68).

There is no doubt that Peter and the other disciples had experienced “seeing” the truths of God displayed in the life of Jesus. They saw his glory at the mount of transfiguration. They heard the Father’s voice at his baptism and witnessed the Holy Spirit’s descent to him as a dove. They saw Jesus as the Son of God.

You and I have an exciting task before us. It requires great determination and perseverance. We have the opportunity to learn the things of God by tenacious study of His Word. Some things are easy – some things require more time and effort. In the end we see a spectacular God!

A Wide Angle

A retired person became interested in the construction of an addition to a shopping mall. Observing the activity regularly, he was especially impressed by the conscientious operator of a large piece of equipment. The day finally came when he had a chance to tell this man how much he’d enjoyed watching his exceptional workmanship. Looking astonished, the operator replied slowly, “You’re not the supervisor?”

Have you noticed how important it is to keep the proper perspective on things? When churches assemble we are reminded that the “audience” is not in the pews and the “performers” are not on the stage. God is the audience and we all are the performers. We must keep the perspective or we distort the reality of our relationship to God.

An elderly man owned a 1965 Ford Mustang which he purchased brand new. For all those years he kept it in his garage and only brought it out for a drive on special sunny summer days. What caused him to act so unusually? It was his perspective – the car was his treasure!

How do we see our relationship with the living God? Is it a treasure? Is it a burden? It is a matter of perspective. God sees us as special to him (John 3:16). How do we view him?

Take time to read: Matthew 6:19-21; 13:44; 2 Corinthians 4:7-12. Remember that from God’s viewpoint our relationship is a treasure!

And The Verdict Is . . .

Well, did she get away with it or is she innocent? The Florida jury decided that Casey Anthony did not murder or abuse her two year old daughter, Caylee. The verdict is in and cannot legally be changed.

This puts us in memory of another high profile case. Did O.J. kill his wife? The jury said, “No.” The debate still rages.

Maybe Casey and O.J. committed the crimes they were accused of and got away with murder; maybe not. In either case we are mindful that there is a Judge before whom they will give an account (Hebrews 9:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10). The truth will be revealed.

But wait! There’s more. Not only will O.J. and Casey be there, I will, too; so will you. Crimes such as murder or child abuse are serious. So is ANY sin. We tend to categorize sin as “acceptable” or “unacceptable.” Some are serious to us and some we can live with. The truth is all sin is serious. All sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).

How often do we sit in judgment of others? How often do we want to determine the guilt of someone else? How often do we gloss over our own actions?

Maybe Justice was served with Casey and O.J., maybe not. One day the books that matter eternally will be opened and we will know. In the meantime, we must remember those books are recording the actions of each of our lives as well. What story are you writing?

Beauty Is In the Eye of the Creator

A dating website recently dropped 30,000 of its clients, refunding the payments some had made. The reason is that the 30,000 were not attractive enough for membership. To become members, applicants are voted on by current members based on their physical appeal. There was a glitch in the system and numerous people slipped through the validation process only to be rejected a few weeks later.

Certainly a business can set up its guidelines, but think about some of the implications of this site. First, people are passing judgments on others based solely on external values. Have you ever known a “pretty person” who was hard to get along with? External beauty alone may not be all it’s cracked up to be. Second, this puts an enormous amount of importance on “peer pressure.” O how we criticize our children for worrying about what others think of them! Apparently we don’t easily grow out of this trap. Third, there is the neglect of the creative ability of God. Often we take credit for many things we have no control over. Where were you in your creation process?

God has created us in his image (Genesis 1.27). That makes us each valuable and beautiful! God showed us our value in giving Jesus for EACH one of us (John 3.16; Romans 5.8; Galatians 2.20). There are no rejects in the kingdom of God!

Whine or Dine?

Is it hot enough for you? We don’t like the intense heat much and we will tell whoever will listen. But wait! It wasn’t too many days ago that we were complaining about sub-freezing temperatures. Maybe there is a pattern here.

The Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt and cried out. The Lord delivered them under the leadership Moses. Not too long after their liberation they began to complain. They expressed their distrust in God as well as Moses. They feared the Egyptians; they complained about the lack of food and water; they complained about the type of food; and they even wished they were back in Egyptian slavery.

The Apostle Paul warns earlier Christians (and us) about this danger in Philippians 2:14 (Amplified Bible), “Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [against God] and questioning and doubting [among yourselves].” He goes on to say that by living without complaining and faultfinding we show ourselves to be God’s children in a wayward world.

No doubt Paul has in mind bigger things than the weather but even in the little things we need to stand out by blessing God instead of cursing. Is he not in control of all things? It is easy for me to criticize the Hebrews for their lack of faith and criticisms of God but I can also fall into the same trap. Instead of whining in self-pity, I should be dining on the words and promises of God!

Stay Close in the Storm

The recent wave of severe storms that swept through our communities caused great loss – more for some than others. We saw the events in Alabama, Missouri, and now here at home in Oklahoma. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who suffered injury, loss of life and loss of property.

For all of us, the storms brought the more than subtle reminder of how very little we can control. Who can harness the storm? Who can direct the tornado? We are reminded of our total dependence on God every day of our lives. One day the weather is calm, the next it is stormy, the next it may be deadly.

A man once asked his teacher when he should repent. The teacher told him that he should repent on the day before the last day of his life. The man correctly asked, “But how will I know when the last day of my life will be?” the teacher responded, “You cannot, so repent every day.”

There are few things we have much control over. We can control our part of our relationship with God. The Bible reminds us of his nearness: “‘in him we live and move and have our being’;” (Acts 17.28). Stay close to God no matter what may come!

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead!

How did you feel when you heard the news about this enemy of America? Maybe you felt relief. Maybe you felt gratitude towards the warriors who risked their lives in finding him. Maybe you felt some exuberance at the thought of one less enemy.

The Bible teaches that there is great joy in the presence of God when a sinner repents and returns to him (Luke 15.7). I wonder what the atmosphere of heaven is when one does not repent and then through death returns to him. Do you suppose there is sadness for the impenitent in the same proportion as the joy of the penitent? Do you think God is delaying the return of Jesus and the accompanying judgment of the world because he does not want any to be lost (Luke 12.49-50; 1 Peter 3.21)?

Don’t get me wrong, I fancy myself a bit of a patriot. I am all for meting out justice to people who initiate and rejoice in the suffering and deaths of innocent people. However, it bothers me to think about the sorrow that must be in heaven when anyone enters eternity without a Christ-based relationship with God.

We serve an unimaginable God. He is filled with grace and longsuffering toward us. However, he is also a just God who will one day rightly judge the world. Will we live our lives so that there is joy over us or sorrow?

Worry Thief

A woman for many years couldn’t sleep at night because she worried that her home would be burglarized. One night her husband heard a noise in the house, so he went downstairs to investigate. When he got there, he found a burglar. The husband said to the burglar, “Come upstairs and meet my wife. She has been waiting 10 years to meet you.”

A real burglar can steal from you once. Worry can steal from you night after night and for many years. Worry not only steals our sleep, but it also steals our health and our abilities to cope with life productively.

Jesus reminds us to trust God over worrying for ourselves. He urges us not to worry about the necessities of life. Instead, put God first and the things we need will come (Matthew 6:31-34). He is not saying to be irresponsible, but to live by faith.

Do you believe him? In these economically difficult times can we trust God? Can we make him the priority of our lives? I wonder what would happen if we did . . . .?

A Power-Filled Plan

A man went into the Military right out of High School. He came into contact with pornography. Even though he became a disciple of Jesus and later a Minister, periodically the images he had seen as a young man would come to mind. He prayed. He fasted; he wept he tried everything he could think of to remove those images from his mind.

One day he hit on a new approach. He began memorizing scriptures. Every time one of those images popped in his mind, he would quote a scripture. Before too any days, he said that the Enemy stopped sending those images because they called him to the words of God. The word of God replaced the images of evil.

Often preachers are quick to tell us our wrongs; but not so quick to tell us how to deal with them. This story reminds us of how important it is to put the right things into our lives. It also shows us a way to combat the Devil when he tempts us. Just as Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4; Luke 4), we are able to defeat him with the power of God’s word.

I encourage you to start memorizing verses in the Bible. Then, through the day recite them. Know that God has power within his word (Romans 1:16).

I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

A Drug Problem

Maybe you heard the story of the little old lady who was amazed at how nice her young next door neighbor was. Every day he would help her gather things from her car or help her in her yard. One day, the old lady finally asked the young man, “Son, how did you become such a fine young man?”

The young man replied, “Well, when I was a boy, I had a drug problem.”

The old lady was shocked. “I can’t believe that.”

The young man replied, “It’s true. My parents drug me to church every time the doors were opened.”

I will grant you that sitting in church services will not guarantee that a person will become a faithful follower of Jesus any more than sitting in a garage will make us cars. However, there IS power in the words and presence of God. He has the power to change hearts and lives. The closer we get to him, the better off we will be.

Sometimes it takes dragging ourselves (or our families) to church, even if the weather is bad or we don’t really feel like it. Nine out of ten times, we are glad we did.

One of the earliest stories of heroism I can remember was that of the Alamo. It was the first movie that my parents allowed me to see alone (the one with John Wayne, that is). The story still stirs me, and every time I am in San Antonio, I try to go by and visit that shrine.

The small group of about 200 Texans withstood the siege of Santa Anna and his vast Mexican army – to the end. Great names come to mind – Crockett, Travis, Bowie are the better known. Each man who took a place in those ranks is no less a hero.

Weather permitting, I will fly the flag of Texas independence on Sunday, March 6, to mark the anniversary of the fall of the Alamo. I want to remember the men who paid the ultimate price for the cause in which they believed. In April, a few days later, Texas finally achieved her independence at San Jacinto – thanks in part to the sacrifice of those brave men at the Alamo.

Do you have a cause to which you are that committed? Jesus laid down his life for all of us (Romans 5:8). The apostle Paul committed to that same cause his life and his death (2 Timothy 4.6-8). It is the cause of ultimate freedom (John 8:31-32) and life (John 10:10). For what are you willing to give your all?

No Fee Worrying

A man said to his friend, “I’m really in trouble. I have a mountain of credit card debt, I lost my job, my car is being repossessed and my house is in foreclosure, but I’m not worried about it!” “How can that be?” Asked his friend. “I have hired a professional worrier, and he does all my worrying for me,” said the man. His friend replied, “That’s fantastic! How much does a professional worrier cost?” “$50,000 a year.” “Wow, that’s expensive. Where are you going to get that kind of money?” The man replied, “I don’t know, but that’s for him to worry about.”

There is a difference between concern and worry or anxiety. Yet, we tend to fall into the “worry trap” and lose out on the joy of the day. That was never God’s intention.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

It seems we have a choice. We can attack our troubles on our own or we can enlist the aid of Heaven. Which do you think works better?

Who Loves You?

Here is an illustration that has been around a while.

A wife woke up one morning and said, “Honey, I just had a dream that you bought me a new gold necklace. What do you think it means?”

“I don’t know, but Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Tuesday, you’ll know,” He replied.

A few nights later, she again woke up after having a dream, “This time, I dreamed you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?”

“You’ll know Tuesday,” He replied.

The night before Valentine’s Day, she again woke up telling him about her dream, “This time I dreamed that you brought me a diamond necklace. What do you think it means?”

“Honey, be patient. “You’ll know tonight.” he said.

That evening, the husband came home with a package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it–to find a book entitled, “The Meaning of Dreams.”

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching! We think of relationships and increasing our affection for one another. We give gifts to show our love. Yet, we realize that God gave us the real gift of love in his son (John 3:16). It is a gift of extravagance towards us (Ephesians 2:1-10). It is also a gift that is practical in its nature (Titus 2:10-14).

We have a unique privilege of enjoying the love of God in his son. We also have a responsibility to reciprocate that love (Matthew 22:36-40).

Radical Leadership — It Is Not What You Think!

If you put any ten chickens into a pen, an interesting thing happens in a short time. Through a series of skirmishes, a “pecking order” is established. Instinctively the chickens decide who the top chicken is all the way down to the lowly tenth place chicken.

This hierarchical thinking is not limited to the barnyard. It seems to be in every arena. It is in our businesses, schoolyards, sporting events, family picnics, class reunions, and even in our churches. There seems to be something in us to want to be the one to “call the shots.”

Jesus opposed the pecking order. Every time the disciples tried to set one, he stopped them (Luke 9:46-50; Mark 9:33-37; Luke 22:24-30). The bottom line for Jesus was not getting the prestige of power, but SERVING. He said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last and servant of all (Mark 9:35).

How is that for radical leadership? It goes against our natural way of doing business. Yet, when we try it, it pays off. Why do we follow Jesus? It is because he became the servant to all of us and we want to go where he has gone. After all, HE knows how to get there!

What a Real Friend!

There is an old story of two men sharing a meal. One says, “You are my best friend. I really love you, brother!” The second man replies, “O yeah, if you really love me, tell me where I hurt.”

Mutually listening and regarding one another is key to true friendships. If we really love a person, we know where that person hurts. They know where we hurt. It is even true of our relationship with God.

Psalm 116:1-2 reads, “I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.” God knows our pain. He is the answer to our deepest plea.

Here is the interesting part – we reciprocate that same love and concern. We learn where God’s pain is. Then, because of our love for him, share in it.

God has pain regarding the lost state of people (Romans 10:1-2; John 3:16). He hurts when we do not fulfill the “law of Christ” by bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:1-2). He feels for those in need, even the least of his brothers (Matthew 25:31-46). When we neglect or violate his word we bring him sorrow (Psalm 119:105).

A relationship or covenant goes two ways. As friends of God, what shall we do when we know His pain? He knows ours and has provided aid. We know His and we . . . ?

Ted Williams — One More Time!

You have probably heard about Ted Williams by now. No, not the baseball star of bygone days, the homeless, unemployed radio announcer. He is no longer homeless or unemployed.

It is interesting that his story is really the story of each of us. Ted made some bad decisions. He trashed his life with drug abuse. His decisions created a downward spiral which cost him his relationships, his career, and his dignity.

He says that he found God in 2010 and that turned his life around. Instead of isolating himself from others, he reached out for help – not a handout but help. He advertised his professional voice on his homemade sign and was discovered. His “audition” demo went onto YouTube where literally millions of people heard that golden voice. Now he has more job opportunities than he can handle. He attributes his success to God and prayer.

Whether we admit it or not, this is our story, too. How many of us have decided to go our own way instead of God’s way? How many of us have found ourselves in a jam because we did not listen to God – we knew better than He. As a result we are down and out. Yet, God is the way back!

God has given us a significant choice. Notice his declaration to the Hebrews in Deuteronomy 30.19:

¹⁹I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live. That is our choice, too.

Do Right!

An elderly man on the beach found a magic lamp. He picked it up and a genie appeared. “Because you have freed me,” the genie said, “I will grant you a wish.” The man thought for a moment and then responded, “My brother and I had a fight 30 years ago and he hasn’t spoken to me since. I wish that he’d finally forgive me.” There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, “Your wish has been granted.” The genie continued, “You know that most men would have asked for wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because you are old and dying?” “No way!” the man said. “But my brother is, and he’s worth about $60 million.”

Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reason? Have you tried to appear one way so that you could manipulate people into your way? It is easy to do. Yet, there is a better way.

The Bible teaches us to do the right thing for the right reasons. Sometimes we must do what is right when it makes us uncomfortable. We tell the truth instead of lying. We hold our tongues instead of speaking wrongly (is that a trick or what? See James 1.26). There are many such examples for us to learn and live by.

Do you have relationships that you need to renew? Do you have sins you need to put behind you? Then, do what you need to do – just because it is right.

Three Wise Gifts for Jesus

A woman once posed the question, “What would have happened if there had been wise women instead of wise men who had set out for the birth of Jesus?” She then answered her question, “First, they would have immediately asked for directions so they would have arrived in time for the birth (not as long as two years later); second, they would have helped deliver the baby; third, they would have cleaned the stable; fourth, made a casserole; and last, they would have brought ‘cute little outfits’ for Jesus to wear home.”

While that is an amusing way to look at the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, the truth is men did come from afar for a very serious purpose in presenting their special gifts of worship to the Son of God. We do not know much about these men. We don’t know exactly who they were or where they came from. We don’t know how many came. We do know they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus (Matthew 2:9-11).

The story of these three gifts reminds us of how we are to be devoted to Jesus. We need to make the effort to search for Jesus (Jeremiah 29:13). When we find him, we must present him with the best we have – our hearts, souls, and might (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Matthew 22:37-38; Mark 12:29-30).

Revive Us Again!

In 1857, four young Irishmen began a weekly prayer meeting. The next year, more prayer meetings started and “Revival” was the common theme of preachers. The next year, 100,000 people converted into the churches of Ireland. This was the beginning of the “Ulster Revival of 1859.”

As a result of the Revival, some significant things occurred. By 1860, crime was reduced and judges often had no cases to try. One county in Ireland reported no crime and the no prisoners were held in the jail. In addition, church services were packed with people, there was an abundance of prayer meetings, family prayers increased, Scripture reading was unmatched, Sunday Schools grew, people stood firm for God, giving increased, vice abated, and crime was reduced significantly.

It seems that there are periods of vibrancy in our churches and then periods of decline. This is an oft repeated cycle among God’s people. Where would you say we are today?

I want to challenge us to a more intentional walk with God. Let us bathe our lives in prayer, asking for God to breathe life into our land. Remember the famous passage:

“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7.14)

Venerating Veterans!

Samuel Whittemore was an American hero in the early days of the Revolution. He had come to America as a British soldier during the conflict with France. He loved the Colonies and decided to stay and purchased a farm in Massachusetts.

Sam believed in American independence and took up arms against the British. On April 19, 1775 the 80 year old warrior joined the Minutemen to attack the British on their retreat to Boston following the battles of Lexington and Concord. He chose a strategic spot on the road and at just the right time fired his musket into the British line. He then fired two pistols at the soldiers and then wielded his old saber against the Redcoats. After inflicting casualties, he was wounded and beaten by the British and left for dead.

Following the conflict Sam’s neighbors came to tend the wounded. They found him not only alive, but trying to reload his musket! They brought him to the doctor, who gave them no hope of survival. To everyone’s surprise, Sam did survive and lived another 13 years!

We might question Sam’s tactical judgment but we can never question his courage or his patriotism! You know veterans of the same caliber as Mr. Whittemore. It is because of these bold patriots that we enjoy God’s liberties! Thank a Veteran for serving!

Exiles No More!

Are you glad the elections are over? I am, too. However, our vigilance is just beginning. We must hold our political leaders accountable to “We the people.”

One of the personal stories that caught my attention last night was that of Marco Rubio. He was elected to the U. S. Senate by Floridians. In his victory speech he mentioned that he was the “son of exiles” from Cuba. What a great American success story! This IS the place where extraordinary things can happen!

I am reminded by his words that we too are children of exiles. Our parents, Adam and Eve, were exiled from the Garden of Eden. In their case, it was their own sin that led them away from the tree of life. Yet, God provided a way to bring us back.

Jesus is the “way, the truth, the life” who leads us back to the Father (John 14:6). Jesus is the source of the extraordinary in our lives. Jesus is the key to real success in our lives (Matthew 22:34-40).

Marco Rubio and his family may never get back home to Cuba. Unless dramatic changes occur there, they may not want to go. We can, however, “go home” to God. Jesus made that possible for us. In a little while, our exile will be over and we can enjoy the eternal presence of our God (see Revelation 22)!

Do You Consent to Be Governed?

In this election year I have been thinking and studying a lot about the early beginnings of our country. The Founders practiced Christianity and established a nation based on the Bible. They declared:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” (Declaration of Independence, emphasis added).

As I read these words, I see a key biblical principle. Governments are to rule by the consent of the governed because God does.

God is the Creator and King of the Universe. However, He gives us free will. He wants us to choose his rule and thereby governs us by consent (Joshua 24:14-15). He does not force Himself on us and will allow us to walk away (John 6:66-67). Of course the real irony is that there is nowhere else to go (John 6:68; Matthew 7:13-14).

How have you enjoyed removing God from our classrooms and other public places? Has our education level risen or fallen without Him? He won’t force his way in, but will allow us to reap the consequences of our choices.

It is a shame to see how far we have gone from God in our country. No longer can we legally pray in public gatherings. We are not supposed to speak freely in our churches about governmental issues. This was not the intention of the Founders. We must work to put God back at the core of our nation.

When you vote Tuesday, vote your Christian values. Vote for the people who will uphold the words of God in our government. Consent to be governed – by God!

There Are No Minor Rescues

Thirty-three miners in Chile have been trapped for weeks hundreds of feet underground. At this writing, they are being rescued, one at a time. A rescuer descended into the mine to assist the miners. In turn, they are being lifted to the surface in a small basket. Local onlookers cheer when each one comes out of the basket.

The world is watching with anticipation as each is saved. This is a great “human interest” story. We each can put ourselves in their places. The world has also come to the aid of Chile and the miners and so we are anxious to see if our efforts have prevailed.

What a great picture of God’s rescue of mankind from the disaster of sin! Man has been trapped for generations below layers of sin. Yet, God broke through and sent “survival” items to us. No expense was spared because humans are valuable in the eyes of God (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). He sent rescuers, one in particular, to raise us individually to safety.

Imagine the scene in the heavens as the angelic host looks on as one, and then another is brought safely home. Imagine the rejoicing in the presence of God when even one is redeemed (Luke 15:7. 10). What joy! God has triumphed!

Dangerous Places

Recently David and Tiffany Hartley found themselves in danger on Lake Falcon on the Texas-Mexico border. Mexican pirates attacked them and killed Michael. Tiffany was able to get away on her jet ski while being chased by three boats. The area is notorious for being a danger place and others have found themselves in “the wrong place at the wrong time.”

I have an overly simplistic solution. Stay home! If Americans stop traveling to Mexico and spending money there, do you think the Mexican government might try to clean up their country? Economics speaks volumes.

But wait; there is also a spiritual lesson here. How often do we put ourselves into situations that are dangerous to our souls? How often do we flirt with temptations that will ultimately harm us? We put ourselves in the “wrong place at the wrong time.” Then we wonder why we wind up in harsh circumstances and even try to blame God for it!

The overly simplistic solution is to “stay home.” Develop a strong spiritual life that keeps close to God and far from the trappings of temptation. The prodigal son (Luke 15) learned this lesson the hard way. What about us? Do we prefer to stay close to our heavenly Father or involved in things that would take us from Him?

The Winner by a Nose!

In the movie, “Roxanne,” Steve Martin was the town Fire Chief who had to deal with his extraordinarily long nose. That was fiction, here is reality. According to Guinness World Records officials, Mehmet Ozyurek has the world’s largest nose. Measuring 3.46 inches from bridge to tip, the Turkish national’s proboscis has earned its spot in the 2011 edition of the record book.

I am sure we can think of something humorous to say about the nose, but that would be too easy of a target to pick. I wonder, however, if he has enhanced smelling capability or if his nose is just large.

Jesus said that if we have eyes to see and ears to hear, we should use them in obeying God. LOOK to the things of God. HEAR the things of God – understand and do them.

It is so very easy in our day to be content with just knowing about God. James reminds us that faith is more than belief; even the demons believe and tremble but are still opposed to God (2.19). Actions must accompany faith (2.17).

It seems pretty pointless to have a big nose and not be able to smell better. It seems pretty pointless to have eyes to see and ears to hear and not use them. It is also pretty pointless to have faith without works.

“Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2.18).

Praise-Filled Prayers

During the sailing competition in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, the winds were so strong that the sailing crews had difficulty handling their boats. Two sailors of the Singapore team were thrown overboard when their boat capsized.

Canadian, Lawrence Lemieux, was sailing alone nearby in a separate competition. Seeing the two men in distress, he left his race to give aid. He rescued the first sailor, then the second. By the time he had completed the rescue, he was hopelessly behind in his competition.

The Olympic judges awarded Lemieux second place, the position he held when he left the race to help the Singapore crew. In addition, the International Olympic Committee gave him a special award for his heroism.

“It’s the first rule of sailing to help people in distress,” said Lemieux, downplaying the incident.

When we think about God’s actions in the cross, we see his concern for us. The cross was a horrific event for Jesus. Yet, helping distressed people proved to be his motivation.

In his suffering, Jesus he likely quoted Psalm 22. There he offered prayers of loneliness and forgiveness. He presented words of praise as well.

God ALWAYS deserves our praise regardless of our circumstances. He is at the center of all things. May our prayers always praise!

A Priority of Prayer

I heard about some residents in a Nursing Home talking about their ailments. One lady was so weak she could hardly lift her cup of coffee. A man had cataracts so bad that he could not see his coffee. One had arthritis so bad that she could not turn her head. The blood pressure medications made another resident dizzy.

One of the group said, “I guess that’s the price we pay for getting old. It sure beats the alternative.” “Thank goodness we can all still drive!” quipped a woman.

That sounds like someone has their priorities a little out of line. Is that not often true of most of us? The Bible reminds us of the priority of practical prayer. In 1 Timothy 2:1, the Apostle instructs, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” A high priority for Paul was prayer – first of all, and especially for others. This is true on an individual basis and in the public setting of worship.

Pressure Praying

Recently I read that the hit movie “Rocky” was based on a real life boxer named Chuck Werner, otherwise known as the Bayonne Bleeder (because he bled so easily and freely throughout his fights). Werner was a good fighter, but not a “great fighter,” and so when he was scheduled to fight Mohammed Ali almost everyone figured he wouldn’t last through the first few rounds. Even Ali predicted an early knock out – no later than the third round.

Werner prepared for the fight as for no other. When he faced the champion, he surprised everyone and lasted the full fifteen rounds! He took a beating in the process, but he stood his ground. Ali was so impressed that he said, “There’s not another human being in the world that can go fifteen rounds like that.” Werner should not have been able to do what he did.

Have you been there? Have you felt like the pressures you are facing are going to pummel you? Do you feel like there is a great Adversary opposing your every move? The truth is, there is.

You can stand, however. “Pressure Praying” is key to preparing and winning the conflicts we face. The early disciples of Jesus were able to do things that they normally would not have been able to do but for their prayers (See Acts 4:23-31; 12:1-17; 16:25-26, etc.). They accomplished amazing things through their prayers. The good news is, we can too! Keep praying!

Are You Mistaking?

Recently I read that the CEO of Google said that there is so much information on the internet that people will have to change their names to avoid the consequences to past mistakes in life. This sounds like the epitome of irresponsibility. I want to dance, but I don’t want to “pay the piper.”

How often do we fail to own up to our behavior? How often do we pass on the responsibility for our actions to someone else? It started in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. When God confronted them, Adam blamed Eve; Eve blamed the serpent. The beat goes on.

There is a legitimate new name for us, however. Revelation 3:12 declares that the followers of Jesus will have his new name given to them. That matches the new identity we have in him. We are “new creatures” in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

As these new creatures in Christ we learn a number of things. First, we are not evolutionary flukes. We have been made and remade by a Creator. Second, as new creatures, we have a new outlook on life. We see that the world in which we live does not revolve around us. The new outlook shows us that all things are for God and His glory (see Isaiah 43:6-7). God is at the center and we, as His creation serve Him.

A third lesson we learn is that we have the opportunity to restart our lives. We get a refreshed beginning. Rather than an arbitrary change of identity as a criminal may have, we get a new identity in Jesus. God blesses and honors us in Him. The old ways pass away and a brand new life stands before us. What a blessing!

God removes the guilt of sin for us. Sometimes consequences remain. We have to own up to and live with those, but they don’t hold us back. The new identity in Jesus gives us hope for the new life and the new world to come.

The Pressure’s On!

We know about the pressures of life. They come in the form of relationships, health, finances, and a host of others. The question is not IF these pressures are coming but WHEN? Then the question becomes, HOW do we respond?

One person described our choice. When pressures hit, we can be like a lump of Play Dough. We can let the impact of the pressure leave its mark on us. Or, we can be like the tennis ball. The pressure causes it to go in for a moment but then it bounces back.

A few years ago Time Magazine published an article in which physicians stated that there are health benefits to religion. They said that people of faith have a higher survival rate than those who are not. People of faith have lower blood pressure than those who are not. People of faith who attend church regularly have less depression than those who do not. In fact, the suicide rate is four times higher among non-church goers.

So, how do we the handle pressures of life? We need biblical answers for this question. John 17 shows us how Jesus handled the pressures he faced. If we can see what he did and apply it to our lives, maybe we feel less pressure and be healthier people.

Remember, Jesus came to give us “abundant life” (John 10.10). That means NOW as well as heaven later.

My Job My Ministry

Recently I preached, “Take This Job and Love It.” We all have job stresses. One of the ways to help us like our jobs, employers, and fellow workers is to turn our places of employment into “Christian Service Centers” and work with Jesus in mind (Ephesians 6:5-9). When we do, we make our job a ministry by serving others. It becomes more than a paycheck.

It is one thing to stand before an audience and say, “Turn your job into a ministry.” It is another to actually and practically do it. Here is an idea I ran across recently that might be a step in the right direction.

Set up a “piggy bank” (a little box with a slit cut in the top will do). Set it on your desk or another prominent area of your work space. Star putting pocket change in it. If someone asks you about it, you can tell them it is money for a charity (you might even get their help on deciding which one to give to). When you and your fellow workers fill up the bank, send the money to the charity. The start over.

When you make this collection, you have done a service for others and honored God in the process. In addition, you have enabled your coworkers to serve in their contributions, too. Your job has become a place of ministry.
